A sad day for me yesterday as I I sold my Range Rover after 5 loyal years of it never breaking down or leaving me stranded at the side of the road. Hard to believe but true, BMW made a fantastic job of the L322. They do have their problems like every other vehicle manufacturer but they are easy to repair and easy to work on. I think the secret of them is if something sounds wrong investigate and repair immediately rather than letting it develop. It's off to the south of France for a pampered life in the sun and I hope the new owner enjoys it as much as I did.

I started looking for something large enough to carry a bike in the back and had looked at a couple of E-Class estates, also looked at the Audi Allroad and Volvo XC60 but eventually went for some Japanese 4 wheel drive tin in the hope it will be reliable and easy to work on

Thanks Mark, I'm getting better slowly, how are things with you? Not a lot done the last 15 months due to the back problem but starting to get a bit of detailing done again, the Range Rover was in need of a good detail before I sold it so that was my first task

I started by cleaning the engine bay
P1060128.jpg

Then onto the bonnet

Then in true British fashion the rain came on

So back indoors to complete the task

Next day the sun came out so a chance for a few pictures

Looks fantistic John! I'm sure the new owner was well pleased! How did you get the swirls out of the Subaru? Great before & after shots!

The Audi came back from the body shop looking stunning
IMG_0625.jpg

What I didn't realise when I collected it was they use lots of glaze to make the paintwork look the part when under their 'special lights' and after a few washes it all comes off leaving all the original swirls and marks that were there before the accident, so this needed addressed and I spent a couple of days sorting it out

Clay bar, polished, glazed

The new owners were blown away with the condition of the Range Rover. For the swirls I machine polished with my usual A Grade polish which I have been using for over 15 years and it's now available on eBay and highly recommended by me CLICK

The Subaru wasn't without its problems

So far to date I've fitted a new clutch and pressure plate as I bought the vehicle with a slipping clutch (well it was inexpensive). NOS genuine Subaru alloy wheels which I believe were originally manufactured for the Legacy & Outback models, and new Michelin CrossClimate tyres. The reason for the new wheels was two fold, the original wheels are diamond cut and in the Scottish climate the water soon gets under the clear coat causing damage which meant the wheels required a full refurbish. If I had them diamond cut they are only guaranteed for 4 months so that wasn't an option, full powder coating with 12 months warranty was almost as expensive as the NOS wheels. Also the steering was shuddering somewhere in the 65- 75mph mark and three different wheel balances from three different fitters never cured it, whether it was cheap tyres or faulty wheels I don't know but all is good in that department now and the CrossClimates give a very comfortable ride.
Full service even though it had a main dealer service a couple of months ago as I like to know things are done the way I like, for instance, the service was less than 1000 miles ago yet the air filter hadn't been changed at the last service, no it wasn't choked but it wasn't clean either and what with the price of a new MAF I feel changing the air filter a cheaper option, also the pollen filter looked like it had never been changed so it was done during my service. 4 wheel wheel alignment as the old tyres were showing signs of wear on the outsides. Full paintwork detail, interior cleaned and all carpets blown out with an airline to remove the dirt the vacuum couldn't pick-up. ARB bushes front & rear. Rear windows tinted. Westfalia detachable tow bar fitted for transporting my bikes. New button for O/S rear reclining seat as this was missing.

After completing these three it was the Mini's turn for a spruce up. SWMBO has been on at me for weeks to give it a clean, but as I don't drive it I was in no particular hurry. A few weeks ago she went down to London to visit our grandson (7 months old now) and asked if I would paint the steel wheels as they were starting to look rough in places. Well the last thing I want to do is rub down and paint old steel wheels so in her absence I started hunting around for a set of alloys and a set of 4 genuine Mini alloy wheels came up on Gumtree local to me at a reasonable price, so I bought and fitted them and stored the steel wheels as thet were fitted with new Michelin tyres less than 3000 miles ago. Then the Mini was treated to clay bar, polish and wax...no glaze for this one :(

^ One Saturday a young chap decided to come round a hairpin bend on my side of the road, he kindly said he would pay for the damage and I asked if he had deep pocket. On the Monday I contacted my insurance company and they took the details, by Monday afternoon the third party insurance company called me and said they would take full responsibility and my insurance company were stood down. The repair to the Audi was over £4.5k, I was given a BMW 7 series for 3 weeks and loss of earnings for 10 days I was without a vehicle, so all in all a large bill for a small bump

Audi insisted on a new grille for the front so I asked if I could have the old one back. I have inspected it closely and still can't see any damage.

The Subaru looks fantastic John! I might hit eBay as my sister has bought a new car, dark blue and could do with a bit of work on it!

It's a great polish to use Mark and doesn't cause white marks on rubber, very easy to use. It has a very slight 'cut' in it but nothing as severe as T-Cut or Farecla so does take a bit more work to remove swirls and scratches, but doesn't leave any new finer marks like T-Cut does.

Below was the Range Rover when I bought it, it belonged to a farmer and the paintwork had severe hedgerow rash and poor washing scratches which I rectified with the A Grade polish

A number if years ago I bought an old Range Rover Classic LSE, it had been repainted at some point in time but I wasn't happy with the finish so out came the wet & dry and rubbed the blow marks out. This is a job for the Farecla, the A Grade would take too long to bring the finish back.
