"Both cars have been over serviced with regular filter changes and 5k oil changes , and are in very good condition ."
You can't over service a car especially as you do it right:):).

Whatever you do there is lots of great advice on here, and remember youtube is your friend.
I also do all of my servicing and it saves a fortune, especially as an older car is worth next to nothing. (Except of course if you want to buy anything half as good it will cost you).

Some great advice on here, thanks guys! Just a few more questions though, does anyone do their own gearbox service and what diagnostic/ service reset tool would you recommend? looking at what i can save over the next five or so years it would be daft not to invest in some kit. And is there any other tools that would be worth getting? Cheers!

This was my adventure with a diy gearbox service.
You will have a newer more complex gearbox/service ?

I tend to use Mann oil and Air Filters. Oil from Newcastle Mercedes eBay shop. Anything you buy log in a folder holding history.
Both my cars are getting senior. Keeping them tip top is a hobby now.

I’ve alway used Mann filters in my century old Volvos and the modern MB rubbish without issue.

If you can do it, go for it, just be sure to keep the invoices and an easy to read log, so in future if you sell it a buyer can clearly cross check.

As for all the alphabetical service nonsense, it’s nothing but absolutely stupidity to provide imbeciles with the illusion of cheaper service costs which, in turn causes niggles and has punters back every 5 minutes, and if the dealers are lucky premature failures. You can’t beat a full on, old fashioned full service every 5k and then, gearbox services annually to keep everything fresh as the day it rolled off the production line.

I for one would be happier to buy a well maintained, low owner car with a full and diligent record rather than a so called full dealer history car also known, as a shag knacker that has barely seen a dodgy oil change and kick of the tyres once in blue moon.

As you have experience and appears also the time, it will no doubt be a better job than some unknown dodgy geezer in an overall. (There are good and bad mechanics everywhere but, expect to have the village idiot do yours that way you won’t be disappointed when your car comes back and you know you could have done it better). You will also be able to spot the crap MB quality and make suitable improvements along the way which a dealer or Indy won’t!

Most service books are available on eBay and yes I do most of the work on my cars (not the gearbox I might add), buy genuine as much as you can and keep receipts and update the service book appropriately, both cars get their oil changed <5k miles which is the important bit with genuine oil and filters
