Steady LJ, you haven't read the Ts & Cs (small print) yet!

They trick the car into thinking that it is stationery up to 30mph consequently all of the speed signals shift including the locking, If I installed one I could watch TV up to 30 mph

I shall be investigating these tonight :D

My main concern would be upsetting the roof, as I have read on here they can be a bit picky about opening and closing at the best of times..........

To be honest it would be the remote operation of the roof that appeals to me more

Have you tried standing near the car and pointing the remote at the handle and holding the open button down, I can on my SL

I purchased one of these roof modules for my old SLK and was very pleased with it. I got it from a german company that were on ebay 120 pounds i think. Would control windows and roof with remote control. Fitted it myself easily.

Thanks for reply antijam, as I mentioned earlier I never even considered looking for corrosion when I tried the car last week, so the boot release never got any special attention from me then, I'll be picking the car up on Saturday and it sounds like it's going to rain! but as soon possible I will post some pics on here for all to see what will hopefully be my pride and joy. Out of interest if I had picked an earlier example, say a 95/96 version do they suffer the same or is it just the later models?
Cheers
Steve

I'm afraid our cars date from what are generally regarded as the depression years for Mercedes quality and reliability. This stems from a shift in the mid nineties from an engineering led management ethos to a customer orientated one. This resulted in the development of a new brand of 'popular' mercedes, such as the 'A' Class - and the SLK too - and consequently the sales numbers really took off. Due largely to this increase in total production, coupled with the increasing attentions of the 'bean-counters', the sub-contractor base both increased in number and became increasingly pressurised to deliver more 'cost-effective' components.

The decline in quality and reliability became increasingly evident over the next few years- particularly in the States - where surveys like the J D Power satisfaction index placed M-B lower and lower over succeeding years, and comparison with 'upstarts' such as Lexus in the prestige sector became embarrassing.

In recent years M-B have reacted to this loss of image and, since the middle of this decade the cars have regained much of their former quality charisma. Indeed, new production processes have practically removed corrosion worries and systems reliability is very much better too.

This doesn't really answer your question I know - but the short response is no, earlier cars are in general no better than later ones. We have to console ourselves with the thought that the second hand M-B we can afford in ten years time is likely to be much better than our present one......

Hi antijam

I agree totally. Although I wonder whether I will still be interested in Mercedes-Benz in 10 years time, no matter how good they might be.

Well now there's a car that new how to rust, it just so happens that my daily driver is a 1883 morris Ital pickup, very rare and very rusty, but buying one of those you expect rust, but buying what is after all considered to be an upmarket car this thread just shouldn't have even started!!!!

Bye the way like your Avatar, I work in one of the 3 breweries in this country that brew Stella, one of them of course being Wellpark in Scotland...;-)

Is that the Itals engine size or year of manufacture?
Im close enough to smell the wellpark brewery when the wind is right, MMMMmmm aaaahhhhhh.
But i still want to kill the B#stard who secretly cut the volume from 5.2 to 5% in Stella last year.
My wife has been complaining her beatings are just not the same as they used to be ;)

Are you aging Don, or just tiring? ;)

Its maybe as the years pass she is becoming more immune so i have to put more and more effort into it and cutting the Stella volume to 5% doesnt help.

I can see her trading me in for someone younger who can give her the beatings of the past she longs for.

Oooooops:Oops: of course it should have read 1983 and not 1883, although I believe some of the components in these cars! could well have dated back to 1883, the engine is actually 1275 throbbing cc's of roar power. As for the Stella, I think you have blame the government for that (I personnally blame the government for everything I can't control)drop the strength, therefor you drink more to achieve the same effect. Not long ago we had to stop canning Tennants Super in 500Ml cans, the reason being one can at 9% = more than accepted daily limit, the brown baggers complained and it's back in 500Ml form, now that's an aquired taste that I have yet to master:lol::lol:

On the Rusty note again, when I decided to take the plunge and go topless the choices were Mazda MX5, fun but to small. Toyota MR2 Mk2 or Mk3, none of these cars have corrosion issues at this age. I've just noticed a 98, T-Bar MR2 in red at a local dealer, what a nice looking car, but unless this SLK turns out to be a rust bucket I fear it's to late to change..

The people I work with in the brewery are professional drinkers, and it's like the Marmite thing, you either Loves Super or Hates Super, there is no middle ground. One person who definately has a drink problem swears by mixing Tennants Super with GREEN pop, I don't know why green, but it knocks him right out after a night shift apparently.......;)

That's the problem with a warm can - you never know if it's input or output!:Oops:

I remember standing at hampden in the 70s with another 120 thousand as pish filled empty lager cans and whiskey bottles whizzed by my head for 90 minutes.
