With no traffic this morning I took the opportunity to play with the cruise control. I found that where as with previous motors, when I selected a lower speed, say 80-55 going into roadworks, they would gently coast down to the required speed, the W211 appears to actually brake. Gently, but it slows down far too quickly to be just the road friction. What I can't figure out is whether the brake lights come on whilst its doing this. I guess the speed limiter and distronic also apply the brakes automatically. Do they put the brake lights on too?

SBC Braking

The W211 and S211 were the first MB's to have this system, introduced in spring 2004.
With SBC Hold, When the brakes are applied hard, on a hill for instance the car stays braked until you touch the throtle, and will not roll back or forwards

It detects if you suddenly take your foot off the throtle to the brake and applies gentle brake pads action, this also works with the speed limiter.

In the rain with your wipers on, the pads pulse to keep the disc dry

I believe that the SBC Stop function has been deleted this year.

No the brake lights don't come on, it is a legal requirment that the brake lights don't come on unless the driver (human) applies the brakes, due to this some vehicles have a brake light supresion relay that switches the brake lights off when esp aplies the brakes
