Hi all,
Can anyone help to put my mind at rest regarding my E320 cdi bought from a local garage 3 months ago with just 44000 miles on the clock. There was no service history for the first three years and the service book was a duplicate
with services done by the local garage only.It was registered to the Royal bank of Scotland for the three missing years (presumably leased).
I have phoned them with no success. The only other clue is a sticker under the
bonnet by an indie specialist called WDM Cars of Birmingham. They also cant help because their records are manual only and it would take too long to look.
The car reg. is VU51EHD first reg in dec 01.
.Having seen on the tele that it takes 2 minutes with a lead and laptop to alter
the mileage I am naturally suspicious.

Hi & Welcome,

Could be a difficult one, however if the RBOS had it then they presumably had it serviced at a MB dealer. With your Registration and Vin No. any MB dealer should be able to give you a print out of any servicing/warranty/repair work carried out within the MB dealer network.
As this car uses the ASSYST servicing system at 44K miles it may only have had 2 services as 18K between services is possible.
Do you have the MOT certificates? or even where it was MOT'd & does the DVLA have any information on the mileage?

Hello do not worry about the Royal bank of Scotland cars, they are not leased they buy them in bulk, mainly MB,BMW and Audi, they are not clocked when they leave to be sold.
They are all sold at auction by BCA (do a search) BCA have special sale days for these cars.If you look on the BCA site certain sale days are for BOS cars, normally 200-300 go under the hammer every month.
Having been to these auctions I can assure you that the milages on the cars are true, I saw them from 3k to 30k on average. The cars on offer just about cover the whole range. I saw 2 SL129's some time back 3 years old with 8k miles.

Many thanks for your prompt replies. The first mot was in feb 2005 with 43000 on the clock. Now that i know that RBOS sells direct through auctions I feel a lot more confident. The car was bought from rbos by the garage that sold it to me.Thanks for your help!. THis forum is great!!!.

Can I just add, though it does not make much difference The Bank Of Scotland do not sell cars direct to dealers, they have to be sold via an auction through legal reasons.

Hi, I don't know if this is any help but when I bought my car a few months ago I got the RAC to come out and inspect it. The service also included all the usual HPI checks etc and it came back with a "mileage discrepency" :? .

The RAC then give you the number of a government office who keep the records for all cars. The mileage is officially notified to them whenever an MOT takes place but moreover any main dealer will allegidly also pass on the mileage whenever the car passes thru their hands e.g. for a service (or something as minor as a light bulb change or valet).

The guy at the government agency was able to read out to me all the recorded mileages together with the dates recorded.

This should enable you to check that your existing mileage had indeed been built up gradually and is genuine.

I'm sorry that I don't have the number for the agency but you could ring the RAC and I think they will just do a mileage check for you without having to have the rather expensive inspection.

Anywho, I don't know if that helps you but it certainly put my mind at rest when I bought my benz at a minumum of £1k below main dealer price from an independent garage on a rather dodgey road on the outskirts of London. (The RAC man said the car was perfect, but that mileage check complelety put my mind at ease) .

Incidentally mine was owned for its first three years by IBM UK, and I reckon that perhaps this (Like RBS) is better than having a previous private owner, as I naively assume that these professional companies ensure their vehicles get properly looked after.

Money is no object to these large firms, now we have computerised MOT's the clocking thing should soon be a thing of the past, unless it gets clocked every year.
