Do you think a TurboCharged 1988 230ce will produce performance similar to todays E320 or even a 320CDI?

Is there a lot of work in achieving a turbo? Not to become a supercar but to match the cars I mentioned above.

Cost?

the 230 is in good condition minus very slight tappety echo. < 150K on clock

I think you'd get pretty high underbonnet temperatures and have to start looking at heat shielding and cooling slots. The six-cylinder cars generate quite a lot of heat and are, I think, sometimes a bit marginal about dissipating it. A four will be cooler but the turbo would dump lots of heat into the engine compartment

You'd need a fabricated exhaust manifold to mount the turbo, a modified exhaust system, some kind of engine management and probably a different injection system. Probably a new fuel pump too though one from a 320 should be OK

You'd probably need to reduce the compression ratio. You could do this with a super-thick head gasket but it'd change the valve timing (a bit) and might cause cam drive chain problems. Alternatively you could have the pistons machined or the head modified

I would think the 230 bottom end would be strong enough. You'd need a bigger radiator (from a 320 with aircon?)

A slightly simpler aproach might be to buy a Kompressor off eBay, mount it in the serpentine belt path & use a longer (aircon) belt to drive it. Then you'd just need to fabricate an air filter mount and a pipe to the injection and sort fueling and ignition with something like a Megasquirt. Less heat with a Kompressor, too

Let us know how you get on...

Its a lot of work! Maybe easier to dump the engine and put a 320 in its place. Or another method would be to use NOX (Nitreous Oxide), which would give you a rush of power for short periods. There was another thread from a while back in which a member was seriously looking at NOX, try a search and a PM to him.

Thanks for replies, but if one put a 320 engine in, R'nt there wiring loom concerns and things like that?
