My W202 C200 (1999 reg.) has just been the subject of a costly auto transmisson part-rebuild after it went to a specialist for a simple fluid change - I intend to post the reasons why when I've more time, as a warning to others about what might happen or to see if I've been 'done'! My question for now is - is my mechanical lock-up working? My transmission chappie was explaining the various goings on in the auto box to me and when lock-up was mentioned, he said "That is why when you accelerate in top gear, the rev counter doesn't rise until your speed builds up."

"Ah", I said, "but it does".

"Well it depends on how the electronics are programmed", was his reply.

So having got my car back, I can confirm without any doubt that if I accelerate even gently, in third or fourth or fifth, the revs go up and the speed builds up to catch up with the revs. if I lift off the throttle, the rev counter drops a bit straight away and the car appears to coast, though there is some engine braking depending on what gear I'm in. This isn't a new phenomenon. I bought the car in 2004 when it was a whisker under 5 years of age (with 69,000 miles) and it has always been like it and I've known no different.

So what is it? Is there no lock-up fitted? Does it disengage at the slightest provocation from the accelerator? Or is my lock up not working and has never worked for the whole five years that I've owned the car?

Doing a bit of Googling before I came here resulted in me finding a site selling clutches (probably in the U.S.) for the 722.6 gearbox because of 'premature clutch failure'. I like the car but it has cost me dearly over the last five years. I'm beginning to feel like the Gene Kranz character as played by Ed Harris in the 'Apollo 13' film -

"Let's look at this thing from a... um, from a standpoint of status. What do we got on the spacecraft that's good?" ;)

Thank you, Malcolm. It seems my car is fine then in respect of the transmission lock-up. I shall assume that it is. And if I have any problems, as per the article you led me to, I will pull the plug out! :D
