In Spain it is pronounced Merthedies. Useful to know at the car hire desk
The Spanish ceceo or ts sound, often misheard as a lisping th. is used when z, c or s is followed by i, a or e, hence Mer tseh des In Latin America the ceceo isn't used, hence Mer seh des.

Well done S80

Well done sir. 42 posts in the space of 4 hours - a lot of excellent banter and proof that we have several Black Belts in Pedantry on the Forum!

It does not get much better.

I tend to use Mercedes - but I like the Mertz-cedes Benz idea, although I think Clarkson, Nedell and others sound daft talking about Porsche-Us.

I say I have an SL55 and some people give me blank looks, mind you they are probably philistines.

Actually, isn't every person who doesn't have a Mercedes a philistine?

I seem to remember Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda saying something like, "Portia - fancy naming their daughter after car" :p

I always thought a philistine referred to a reactionary, particularly against the liberal arts, chavs are the boorishly uncultured ones. Clearly neither epithet applies to this august bunch.
