I have to replace the passenger door speaker grill on my 2001 c class coupe. I have obtained the replacement grill, but would very much appreciate some advice before I fit it, as the air bag has to be removed with the door trim, and I am not sure how to go about this. I would be grateful for all helpful suggestions!

Basic rules apply ,then easy to take off. Disconnect battery and wait 15 mins.
door card can then be unplugged.

go to this site with the first 6 numbers of your VIN and find your car, then go to coverings and you will see how they are fixed on.

Unfortunately if I disconnect the battery I willl lose the radio code resulting in an expensive visit to the main agent. There is a 12V power source near the battery which should protect the code while the battery is disconnected, but which may energise other circuits----like airbags. Any ideas?

If no code came with the Radio, the chances are that it is a once only code from new, it will tell you in the handbook. it will cost you nothing to ask MB just give them your VIN

I may be wrong! but all the door cards I have removed with side air bags the air bag has been fitted into the door not the door card and therfore does not need to be disconnected when removing the card.

Hello Bob, yes you are right in what you say. This is a safety issue only, whilst you and I can work on these things without disconnecting the battery, advice to other member cannot be given out if there is a risk of danger, air bags can be deployed just by scraping the surface, or worked on in sunlight.
All of my work for the last 30 years involves working to BS, any advice that I give out is safe, and I will always keep it that way.

Many thanks to Television and Mercman1 for your help and input. Having ascertained that the sidebag is in the door and not part of the card I was able to remove the door card without disconnecting the sidebag and replace the broken part. I live in Spain, my car is a German import, and the local MB agent is not too helpful so this forum is of great benefit.
