Hi!
I got simple question I am hoping for quick straightforward answer. My 2004 S211 E320 CDI developed problem in one of the dipped beam headlights and it's quite expensive to replace it with new. I was considering the option to downgrade to ordinary H7 halogen headlights, but is it possible to do straight swap without too much alterations?
Thank you very much in advance!

Why not source a decent 2nd hand unit?

You can’t legally “downgrade”. The car you have is homologated to whatever lighting source it was built with. That cannot be changed without you informing your insurance that your car is modified with headlamps not as built.

For a HiD lamp the problems you will encounter are:

Ballast
Lamp
Levelling actuator.

The first two are replaceable.

What is your problem to start with?

the regrets you would have going from: decent lights where I can see where I'm going

to: I can't see anything, the cars is now only fit for the bin

would be sad to hear, but fully justified... ebay second hand lamp no issues

Very bad idea, if it could be done, Not financially viable, and I think you would wish you took it to a main dealer rather than crucify your lights.

Tomsave money, Get one on ebay and get a decent Indy to fit it.

Thanx a lot for all replies and apologies for not being able to answer earlier.
I was considering the downgrade due to not being able to find matching second hand headlight. Everything on ebay and other platforms is for H7 bulbs or seller not able to confirm whether this they're selling will match my original one. Halogen headlights are easy to find for about £50 each. I agree there is no way you can compare them to HID, but since I don't drive this car anymore and just wanted to make it road worthy for less. The problem is with cornering system, seems like the lens is popped out and it won't stay in it's place.

If you have a reg or VIN, I can give you part number(s) of what will fit
