Hiya

I'm new on here an I'm just looking for some advice.

The DPF is constantly making my EML come on and off. Sometimes the EML is on and it's in limp mode but other times the EML is on but it's not in limp mode.

I've had the car about 4/5 years and it's had a couple of forced regeneration and new DPF back pressure monitor done in 2015 and then another forced regeneration done in 2016.

Is it worth paying to get the DPF cleaned? Or has anyone got any other solutions?

Thanks in advance.

Kirsty

Hi and welcome.

What type of driving profile do you have?
This sounds very much like you do mainly very short hops.
In order for a regen to occur automatically the engine has to be fully up to temperature and short runs (especially in winter) don't allow this.

Yes I mostly do short runs. However, I do take it on long runs and keep it between 2000-3000 and the EML light comes off but a few days later it’s back on again.

It’s unlikely it’s had the latest software installed. How and where would I get that done?

The best way to find out would be to ring about and verify they can source and install updates. May be worth calling your local dealer to see if they would assist. There's an argument to say software updates that affect the operation of the vehicle (as opposed to enhancements) should be free or nominal cost.

Needs an online connected star to do updates. Dealwrs normally chsrge, very few are free , our dealer round here will charge £100+ just to plug it in.

My car knowledge is very limited so can some please explain how installing the latest software updates will help with the DPF issue.

Thanks

Basically everything is under control of the cars brain.
It gets information from a bunch of sensors (temperature, speed, air temp, engine speed, exhaust back pressure etc) and uses an internal program to determine when to do a regen.
If any sensor gives a reading outside a set of parameters it doesn't do it. So a change in the software can alter the parameters of when it's allowed to do a regen. Those are stored as software updates.
