2006 CLS 320cdi
Good evening all, I hope you’re all well?!

I once again find myself turning to the most knowledgeable MB people I know as this this one has me completely baffled!

Basically I’ve been out and bought a 2006 CLS 320cdi (225bhp) and after some research I was under the impression that my car was fitted with a DPF. However, according to everyone else who I’ve spoken with has told me that being a 2006 model it was not made with a DPF and they was introduced only to cars made in 2007 onwards.

So with that said, you would simply think it’s a closed and shut case and that’s it! But unfortunately it’s not because according to the data sheet that I got using the MB vin decoder, it’s states on there that I have a DPF!!

So which is it?? Either everyone who I’ve spoken with is wrong in saying they was only on models after 2007 or their right and the spec sheet is wrong! Please someone help me out and explain what the deal is, it’s giving me a headache trying to find the right answer.

Thanks Rick

If the inside of the exhaust tips are black and sooty it doesn’t have a dpf (or it’s been removed ) . My 2009 E320cdi doesn’t have one , so odds are yours won’t either .
Under the car will yield clues on the exhaust pipe if a dpf is there .

I had 2004 W211 which had DPF, from factory fitted. So if your data card says 474 SA code, it has one (unless someone gutted and remapped it)

Well this is my spec sheet, so I’m gonna assume it has a DPF until I’ve had it checked out and told otherwise ‍♂️ 81A24664-5B1C-445D-82E3-964CADF01408.jpeg

474 is the code, Mercedes didn’t regularly fit them until ~2008. My late facelift 2006 W211 didn’t have one, in 2008 they switched to chrome tailpipes out of the bumper and fitted DPF’s at the same time so the exhausts wouldn’t “soot up”

So I’m assuming the person who ordered it even though bought a diesel car had some kind of guilty conscience therefore opted for a DPF

They were optional on some cars - although I thought it was only the 4cyl models - and it made them EU4 and reduced company car tax.

Some info here, https://dieselnet.com/news/2003/08daimler.php but things were all a bit messy at the time - my Oct 2004 built but 2005 model C270 didn't have one, I don;'t think they were ever fitted to the 5cyl engine, which of course was dropped around that time.

Yes, it was optional after 2004, I was caught outwith a 2004 C class.

The op's car left the factory with a DPF, it still being there is another question.

The sooty tail pipes isn't as definite as many believe, neither is smoke out the exhaust.

To my mind the way for us that can't read a map to tell would be the regeneration history, as a DPF can be rodded out and then there are no visible signs of removal.

Nope, I bought car used from Germany. I think it was fitted in order to get higher EUR emission level, in Germany that could give some discounts on taxes and area tolls.

My 2007 W219 and 2009 W212 has DPF, both bought from Sweden.

I have mentioned many times, DPF were an optional feature in 2004 when I got my W220.

Look in the car to see of you can see a DPF. If you have the original build sheet in the back of the original service book - its white and blue this has the build data ans options of your car.

Otherwise go to a dealership and kindly ask them.

Surely if it's on the datacard then its fitted.
By the same token some features weren't fitted to cars although general concensus or indeed the interior of the car may suggest otherwise e.g. rear screen sunblinds.
