2009 W211 E-Class E280 Sport Estate (OM642 3-litre diesel V6), 3x remapped, now returned to stock
Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere:

According to the MB specification database, my 2009 W211 E280 CDI SPORT is Euro 4:

926 - EXHAUST GAS CLEANING WITH EURO 4 TECHNOLOGY

I've been given to understand that this means it DOESN'T have a DPF but I want to check it with you knowledgeable chaps first. Is this true?

If so, I have a number of queries:

1. What is "exhaust gas cleaning" if there is no DPF?

2. Do I still need to avoid short journeys, as I have been doing, religiously? I suppose there's still the EGR to think about...

3. I was so certain it would have a DPF that I put in a can of Liqui Moly DPF Protector the other day. Will this harm my engine?

Hoping for enlightenment...

Just found this on a site called dpfproblems.net:

The ML320CDI and 280CDI had a DPF fitted from early 2006, and it is believed that all of the 280CDI and 320CDI 3.0L engines shared the same introduction date.

How can I know for certain?

I have iCarSoft MBII - would that tell me?

Check the VIN for the complete specifications of your MB.

Just been back on the MB Teilekatalog site with my VIN. It definitely doesn't show SA Code 474:

386 - MOBILE PRE.-INSTALLATION (MTUS)
427 - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION 7-SPEED
428 - STEERING WHEEL SHIFT BUTTONS/GEARSHIFT PADDLES
461 - INSTRUMENT WITH MILES IND. AND ENGLISH LEGEND
477 - TIRE PRESSURE LOSS WARNER
486 - SPORTS SUSPENSION

So I'm confused now...

58 ML-320CDI.
Not all W164 ML’s have DPF. My 08 420 did, but my 58 320 doesn’t. Confirmed by data card and physical checking.

Have a look. It's easy to tell however as I said, no 474, no DPF.

Put your finger in the exhaust. If it's sooty black then no DPF. If its clean it has one.

my fathers is Feb 2006 with

926EXHAUST GAS CLEANING WITH EURO 4 TECHNOLOGY
983COC PAPER EURO 4 TECHNOLOGY W/O REG. CERT. PART II

it doesn't have a DPF but lots of stuff says they do - the S class of this era got the DPF - it was optional on the E class

S classes of any era are always the first of the Mercs to get new gadgets. In 2004 they were an optional extra on my W220 model atleast.
So for them to be standard on a 2006 ML is questionable.

OP if you still doubt visit MB dealer and ask.

I think the truth is they may have been available from early 2006 as an option, but very few people would have ordered one with that option.

Yeah, I've decided to go for a remap so I'll ask the MB indies while it's in...

My car was REGISTERED in September, 2009 - one of the last of the W211s. I believe DPFs became compulsory in that very month. Given when my car would have been MADE, though, it's highly likely to have been before the compulsory imposition...

September 2009 was for new type approvals but wasn't mandatory until 2011.
As yours wasn't seeking new type approvals it was not mandatory on any w211.

Thanks for that. I know that I'm not ULEZ compliant and have to pay top-whack fees to go into Birmingham and London - is that a clue that the DVLA database knows I'm Euro 4 without a DPF?

Even if you were Euro5 you wouldn't be exempt.

My 212 E350CDI 2011 is Euro 5, no AddBlue.
I get off at M5 J1 & go through Smethwick, if I need to get to the south side of Brum.
Our R Class is Euro 5. If I need to get to the centre of Birmingham I take the V8....

2014 639 Viano- 651, 5sp Auto. 2009 S211- 646, 5sp Auto.
Our S211was registered May 09, no DPF.
The VIN will suggest in one way or another that there is a DPF, 474 code or EU5, or I've even seen DPF as a description toward the top. w/o a 474 code.

To be really sure get underneath and look for a silencer type box that has 2 pressure tapping points, that is a DPF.

Diagnostics will often see such as DP pressure sensor if it has a DPF.

I've had a 2009 DPF with sooty exhaust.
I owned a 2004 C class with DPF, installed as an option.
