droping out of gear - nothing above first gear

I have a 230CE auto and the problem that has happened this morning is the car sets off in first gear but as soon as the revs get to the stage when it should go to second gear it drops out of gear the revs go up and it don't got to second gear and so on, is it some thing to do with the automatic transmision.

First things first, check the ATF level in the gearbox.

Hi Mark

After you have checked the oil. It sounds like the clutch plates may be worn out. If so then the G\box will require stripping. You could drop the gearbox pan down and check for any black sludge. Then its a good sign the plates have disintergrated.

Thanks for the help I've got a garage in camden that recently put a secondhand engine in for me, I'll let you know how I get on because I checked the oil last night and the levels look fine also very clean.
