Dumb Exhaust Question

On the CLK (W208) was the exhaust ever finished in Black? I only ask as I'm in the process of cleaning it (stage 1 finished) and want to check before I move on

i cant be certain, but shouldnt it have a chrome trim?

Yeah thats what I was thinking, I think someone has taken some paint to it at some point in its life! I'll add a shot now

Took 30 od min just to clean the rust off and give it a once over

Take your wives tooth brush and do the inside

Yeah I have to do the inside as well, but was not sure if I should use "more" elbow grease or if black was the original colour. Am off back out now to get an even finish on it all black or not it will all be the same soon enough

The fact that you have them nice and clean looks so much better, the tips do kind of look stainless in the pictures

I'll get it off tomorrow and try a different approach to cleaning it, even if it turns out to be black paint (hope its 10 years of c*** from the road) ill prep it all and paint it back

Easy to take the tip off be prepared for the stupid looking exhaust shape it hides I think you can buy black tips on eBay last owner prob did

yeah I done a quick search on ebay even for a new tip but it turned nothing up sadly

The tip on my SLK exhaust looked like that when I bought it, not sure if it was originally black or just years of road c**p, unfortunately no tips on ebay would fit due to weird looking pipes Ended up at a dealership and parting with £50 for a nice shiny chrome one

I'm planning on taking mine off thursday and giving it a decent clean then spray it black if no chrome comes up, black looks good with the body colour
