Hi Digisatman,

I presume you mean a hard disk recorder, or comb. HD/DVD. I,ve had a Panasonic HD/DVD with freeview for a year with no trouble at all. I,m using it with freeview and the excellent EPG programme guide. I,ve recently thought of using cable, (Virgin in my area), but then I couldnt use the programme guide to do timer record. I could use cable direct into my Sony tv, without using virgin box, then use the data link between the Sony and the Panasonic to do timer record. It all starts to get a bit complicated and my wife would murder me anyway. Give a bit of thought to how you might want to use it in a years time, then decide.

They are all throw away items if they go wrong so do not spend too much on one

Had a JVC combi vcr/dvd recorder, load of rubbish and cost nearly £300. Power supply failure seems to be main problem. Have just bought Toshiba Combi for £146 and is so much better than JVC.

I throw away loads of the things, including Sony's and every other make. If the power supply is down I can normally fix OK, when the micro or in the case of a CDR once it does not read or know that it has a disc in they are binned.

The hard drives are the only way to go long term.

Worth keeping a look out for the latest generation of TV's with a hard drive built in.
LG are leading the way here, does away with the need for any external hardware.
So long as they have twin tuners you can record one channel while watching another and record offline too!

This might sound like a good idea to an end user,, I see it as something else that will go wrong and add to the complication of fixing the rotten things
