my newly acquired S320 2002 spits out the disc very soon after inserting it, the cd change is missing and a suggestion is that this is essential in the loop
Can anyone advise? or is spittng the dummy symptomatic of a stuffed head?

Are you talking about the Navigation CD or Audio CD ?

Can't really help with why it is spitting the disc out, but can tell you that the slot only takes the Nav CD.

Don't put audio CD's in the CD drive !!

Try using a CD laser cleaner from any audio shop.
If that doesn't work try another genuine nav disc.

If the missing CD changer in the boot (why is it missing)?? is the problem, you can easily get one on e bay and plug it in yourself

Failing all of the above, you have a knackered cd drive (very common on COMAND 2.5)

If knackered it can easily be fixed/replaced for about £150 in UK. Let us know and I can recommend someone

;)

PS

I assume its COMAND 2.5 (original) you have, and not a 16x9 widescreen retrofit !!

You an play audio CD's in the single slot in the DX Comand, though I choose not to to avoid any problems with the unit

COMAND manual here ( USA version) different button names. thats all.

Does COMAND give any on-screen reasons for ejecting?
