I have an e 300 avantgarde td estate,98 model. It does not appear to be right somehow, after starting and of course in drive,I go up the first hill from my house and it starts to sort of jerk ! also it sometimes drops out of gear and goes into a nuetral state.I have to stop, turn off ignition and restart, and off we go again as if nothing had happened. This is starting to worry me,any ideas ? Thanks. p.s this is my first posting as a new member.

Has the gearbox oil/filter ever been changed, what's the mileage? Also check the vacuum pipe on the inlet manifold that goes to a unit fitted on the NSF inner wing which is prone to splitting.

This is a diesel so there will be no manifold vacuum pipe (because there's no manifold vacuum!:) ).
If this is a vac controlled box then the vac pipe come form the proportioning valve on the side of the IP, via the hyperbolic interloper.

Are boxes on this year of car not electronically controlled?

It had an A type service at 175000 miles,it says on the job sheet that all fluid levels had been checked but no mention of gearbox oil/filter change, I would have thought at this level of a service ( £700 ) that this would have been done ! Thanks.

Unless it was specially requested an ATF change will not have been done. Until recently MB said the gearbox was sealed for life. They didn't say what the life was though... As failures have now started dropping into the 3 yr warranty period MB have now changed their minds and decided on ATF changes at between 40K & 60K miles depending upon who you ask. As it appears the car hasn't had an ATF change it would be worth doing that in the first instance. Parrot of Doom has posted an excellent how to on this forum.
