Anyone else have problems with their car, having a hard shift at times, other times it feels as if it cannot find the gear then find it and shifts it hard into gear?

I had a similar problem with my c36.  It got worse until the gearbox failed.  I had to get a new brain!  The gearbox electronic valve block had packed up or something.  I would advise you take it to a specialist very soon, use it as little as possible.

There has been a thread about 'post '96 5speed gearbox premature failure', or something like that, that indicates that 5sp autos are a bit frail.  However the jist was that gearbox oil should be changed every 30k miles despite what MB say!

I wish I had listened!  Well, I found out after I had the problem.  The repair cost me £1200.  I hope you have not got the same problem as mine!
