I really want one of these.!

Couple of questions if any one could kindly help me:

I know they only made in Left hand drive and hence aren't a UK model.

I drove the ML 420 cdi a few days ago and loved the engine but the car doesn't really suit what I need from a car so am now seriously wondering about importing an E 420 cdi from Germany.

Does anyone know either ( i.e have any experience with ) any dealers in Germany where I could order one new for export ? Or any a nearly new one as long as it a facelift model.

Would I be able to insure it as it doesn't show in the online quoting systems for most insurance companies?

Driving LHD doesn't bother me as I've had quite a few LHD cars here - currently driving an LHD, 2006 E 320 cdi estate.

Does anyone know if with the new E Class due next year they will finally make a RHD E 420 cdi?

Many thanks all

Paul

1.there are a couple of LHD specialists in the UK - try a serach on google, or honest john of the telegraph has made mention of them in the past. They are really intended for people wanting to a buy a lhd car here to emigrate overseas. They will be able to source one for you, if you are perpared to pay

2.If you really wnat a new one, have you had a word with your local dealer to see if they can get one built and shipped for you. They may charge extra to make it UK legal - ie spedo, hlights will need to be changed

o3. Best starting point would be that you will have to find a penpal or new best mate in germany who will scour the version of automart, or mercedes.de to find a couple of cars you could buy. Or you can do this if you have a good comand of german. Not sure if there is any extra VATor car tax to pay if and when you register the car here

There is a chap in Edinburgh who imports cars and is very good and reliable. Mainly RHD but has done LHD for people I know, people who perhaps spend lot of the year abroad etc. Very good contacts and advice

I wonder why they're not available in RHD. The steering column/box used to always be the argument here but with 6.3 V8s already in the 211, I cant see the reason why not. Awesome engine with over 300bhp & over 500ft/lb torque, 155mph, 0-60 in under 6 seconds & over 30mpg average. Not many big 4 doors saloons that can boast these figures.

Yes but having driven the ML with both the 420 and the 320 I think it is worth at least trying a prolonged drive in the E320cdi. OK the 4.2 in LHD does 62 in under 6 seconds but the 320 does it in 6.8 and it is remarkably quiet, smooth and refined. The most amazing diesel. Well worth a try and a lot less depreciation than you'll have on a lefty.

These people specialise in Merc imports both LHD and RHD: -
