E Class 7g or 9g and real world MPG

I’m looking for my first Mercedes. It will be an E Class estate between 2013 and 2016. I’ve shortlisted 4 but would like to know if there is any significant benefit from having the 9g gearbox.
Also what are people getting for real world mpg on these cars, data in Autotrader suggests 50mpg+ on a run which will be significantly better than the 28-30mpg of my current T5 bus.

The 9G is much more economical than the 7G (in my experience) I had a W211 E320CDI with the 7G and a E220d with the 9G
Having said that the E229d was Euro 6 Compliant and I'd be more concerned about the emissions equipment failing than benefits in fuel economy.

I have a late 2016 model the s213... think it's 9g although 9th gear hardly ever engages.. lovely car inside out.. 2.0l diesel.. economy averages around 40mpg on my daily 70 mile commute, 45miles motorway, 25 miles London roads...
service costs on the higher side.. roughly £600 per service from dealer and about £400 from an indi.. Don't go for the thin profile tyres please.. about £235 a pop

I haven't had any problems with it at all driving last 16k odd miles whereas other people here have had it with the dealer many times and changed probably £10k worth of stuff under warranty but I believe that's more of an exception...

Hi Simon, welcome to the world of MB.

I do only have experience of those two gearboxes on the C Class, but the 9G is by far more superior in as much that the gear changes are seamless. I believe I am getting 10%+ improvement with the 9G over the 7G, however the engine with the 9G is a 2Ltr whereas with the 7G was a 1.8Ltr so not a true comparison. Out of the two ?, there really is no choice, the 9G a much better choice.

Nox sensors x2 £ 1200 fitted .

Ad blue tank in the boot £1100 , if the level sensor fails.

Around those prices anyhow .

I average 34 mpg to work and back over 7 miles and includes the cold start . On a run to Hull I saw high forties.

Same engine I had in a Cls 7g and I only ever saw 34 mpg at best .

As per above, NOx sensors fail and need updating following software updates, AdBlue crystallises requiring new injectors, pump and tank many £K to fix.
Please note the Euro 6 Emissions equipment failing isn't limited to Mercedes, pretty much every Euro 6 Diesel can suffer - please have a search for AdBlue issues on this forum and on the wibbly wobbly web in general.

I did 48K miles in my E220d in 18 months and didn't have any issues at all... however it didn't have the emissions fix software update (which uses more AdBlue) when I had it. I loved the car so much that I would have spent my own money on one (this was 2016/17) - things have moved on since then and it's becoming apparent that the emissions equipment is flakey at best

I'd seriously look at the mileage and usage and then go and buy a V6 or V8 petrol instead (whilst you still can)

As BC above I ŵouldn’t go near a diesel EU6 car regardless of make unless it had an extended warranty. I’ve been looking at a BMW 535i but can’t quite convince myself that I can live without an E class estate but it looks like a long wait for a E43/53

As regards the 7g v 9g box the 9g is much better, smoother changes and more mpg and almost as good as the BMW 8g ZF transmission

I’ve been looking at a last of the line 535i Touring 17 plate with 18k miles advertised at £30k which is as you say £5k above where it should be but on the plus side they will give me £20k for my 435i but only £10k for my E350cdi (which is the one I’d want to trade)) so I won’t take it any further

My 2019 C220CDI with 9g box achieves combined of about 45mpg, will do 60+ on an eco motorway run at 70 mph.

I've got a V220d (8seater bus) and my average over the last 14k miles is 40.9mpg with the 9g box. I did have the same car (older) with the 7g box and the 9g is much better. I k ow it's a different engine to what you're looking for but the 9g box is definitely the pick. Normally the adblu etc is OK as long as it is used regularly and get quite a few long runs. If it's mainly shorter runs (less that 30miles) I'd stay away from the euro6

I’d want at least £13k for it trade in against a £30k car.

E350 7G Saloon - assume generally at 45 +/- 4 MPG between winter versus summer.

Have looked at E43/E53 but they are holding prices too well (as are all cars) in the current climate.
