Switched car on today to find that when I applied the brake to shift into gear, got a fault light indicating both ABS and ESP faults.
The obvious common factor is the wheel sensors which are common to both systems... anybody know if this is a common fault, and whether it is a genuine fault or possibly caused by bad wiring/connections

Absolutely, I am guessing 210 - 124 doesn't have esp and you'd probably get even more messages on a 211 - as Lamar says, almost certainly the brake light switch.

Mine is a 2000 model 210, and I have also an older and rock solid E250 1999 vintage which had ABS but no ESP.

Will certainly check thebrake light switch but am a bit puzzled as to why a faulty or non operative brake light switch would affect ESP as well

Bingo checked the brake lights - not working so thanks to you for the excellent diagnosis

As I am new to the 210, can anybody explain how the fusing system works - I have two boxes one under the bonnet and the other under the rear seat.

My older 124 had clear fusing for lights such as brake and side lights - not so on the 210, only very minor lights such as courtesy lights are covered.

Presumably the lighting ciruit is protect by a single very large fuse?

Obviously am trying to check whether a fuse has blown before going the route to get the brake light switch replaced
