SBC hold worked in a similar but more scary way! Auto hold on newer vehicles is excellent

but why do we need it? The options used to be keep your foot on the brake, stick it in Park or even use the 'handbrake'. I've always put my auto in Park if I thought I'd be stopped for more than half a minute. I can kinda see why some might want/need hill start assist ....

Less strain pushing in and out of park, in my case less back pain than having my foot on the brake, more convenient....?

Which is why there’s an awful lot of rose tint when people are looking at going back to a 60’s or 70’s “sports” car. They soon realise that cars have moved on a great deal, comfort, convenience, usability as well as safety has moved on a lot in the past 40+ years...

With SBC there was two modes hold and stop, hold would do what it said and just hold the car until the brake or accelerator was pressed and was therefore disengaged. Stop was like hold but wouldn’t disengage on accelerator press up to 5 mph (iirc) if lifting off the accelerator under this speed the brakes would reapply and bring you back to a stop. I only found stop useful in London when you really do move just a few feet at a time, other than that it was pretty pointless, hold on the other hand is very nice to have.
I think Stop was coded out of the SBC units via a recall posing as the timer extension recall for the pump and dropped on the facelift.
