I have a very flat battery on my E class. the car has been standing for three months whilst I have been abroad.
I have tried jump starting using leads connected to my neighbours car but to no avail, any thoughts??

Hello,
When you say "to no avail",do you mean that the engine won't start despite turning over,or that it doesn't turn or that there is no life in the car at all?

I do know that jump starting any modern car is fraught with danger, especially when its own battery is totally flat, its electronics can be damaged beyond repair by the current surges generated.
Much safer to disconnect the battery and trickle charge it fully before trying again.

Regards,
Nick.

Thanks for the reply Nick,
The engine doe's not turn over at all when trying to jump start, I shall remove and charge the battery as you suggested.

Cheers
Glenn.

Hello Glenn,

I have also had a second idea,I don't know how old your car is,we used to own a 1998 E300TD and the activation of the starter motor was controlled by the electronics, not just by turning the (keyless) key.
It would only start when it was ready,I assumed it was going through a series of self checks behind the scenes.
I wonder if the totally discharged battery on your car would cause a fail of one or more of these tests and so prevent the starter activating.
Apart from its beauty, one of the really good things about our SL is that it just starts, using jump leads, even when some fool:Oops:leaves it parked with the interior lights on for a week.

Regards,
Nick.
