HELP NEEDED.

We have a T plate E CLass and have had an accident with the key.

When supplied we only had the electronic key (without the mechanical skeleton key). On the weekend the key went for a swim and now doesn't work.

We have been advised by Merc today that the vehicle has to be in the possession of a dealer before they will issue a new coded key!

Is this the case - can someone provide some feedback maybe.

Obviously this is gonna be an expensive mission as somehow we need to have the vehicle transported (still locked) to the dealer.

Thanks for your time in reading this!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Last year the price of the keys went up from £150 to £200.

MB published a little booklet on keys and all of the dealers have them.

It states in that book that this new charge will include a MB tech gong to your place of work or home etc, just so that the car can be seen to exist.

You will need to take some ID and the car V5 to the dealer.

I have just repaired a key for a member that was been in water, you should remove the batteries just in case the old one can be repaired

Hi Malcom.

Thank you for this advise. We have been told that they Merc has to have service history for that visit by a merc tech to be free? Does it say that in the small print of theis new guide?

SO you recommend taking the key to pieces and trying new batteries?

Thanks for the reply!

I am sure that it does not say that in the small print, but I no longer have the book.

Re the key, it will have to be dried right out before you will know and the chances are it would have flattened the batteries within an Hour.

The best way to dry them is with heat, as water droplets can sit between the pins ,and under on the IC's in the PCB.
Just warm and shake it for a while.

Not a good picture but you can see the green algae on this one that I have just fixed, caused by water
