Hi I am new to this so hope i get things right

I am looking to Buy a E class saloon. It seems that the W124 model is the last real Merc..by most accounts. I do need a Diesel, thats just the way i am.
Now can i get one with air bags in this series or not. Also are any of the engines in these cars got rubber cam belts. I understood most of the diesels were of the chain varierty. Are there turbo D versions, and also are the manuals that Bad ?
Ok hope i have covered everything.
Thanks for any help

Richard.

As far as I know...

your best bet is to find one of the later (93-0n) E300D's with the OM606 24v engine. There was also the E250D which come up now and again. None of the diesel 124's had turbos- the steering gear was in the way for the older cars and the later 606 engine was designed at first as N/A.
The older engines are robust but slow it it seems hard to find a good condition 300D these days.

From 93 they had driver's airbags, with an optional passenger side one.

Metal timing chains in these engines.

I've not driven one, but the manuals are supposed to be clunky, and there's no handbrake- it's a foot-operated 'handbrake' making it awkward.

Generally the diesel models (esp later versions) sell for quite a lot higher than the petrol versions, but of course they'll probably go on twice as long...
