Hi,
I've got an E320cdiEstate 2000X which seems to have a problem with the steering. It seems to have excessive play and is not very accurate when parking i.e. too far from the curb, or not straight. I’ve never had problems parking with other cars the last being an old Volvo 740 Estate. With this car my parking has become amateurish.
Is this a feature of this car or is something wrong?
I've still got some MB warranty left so hopefully it covers this.

Thanks.

Have the same car 2001Y and although the parameter speed sensitive steering is intentionally light at low speeds it is very accurate. No problem with parking. I think there is something wrong and suggest you get it seen to quickly under warranty.

Same here, my 00X E320CDi is very positive on the steering. Its certainly an improvement on the 124 which never felt that direct.

It needs a check over sooner rather than later. I assume you have checked the obvious re tyre pressures and wheel bolts etc. Also look for uneven wear on the tyre, this is one of the best tell tales of a problem with the steering geometry.

There should be very little play in the steering. Steering box equipped cars like the W124 used to suffer but the W210 is rack and pinion which doesn't unless something is very wrong. Get it checked as it could be dangerous.

JB, Malcolm,

I can't let let you get away with the 124 being slack!! Mine is wonderful, as good as the T210 and thats quite good. Neither are as good as my old Imp's steering though - HUMPH!!!!!

I havn't tried other 124s but Bluegrass' sound excessive and needs checking.

(A thought to ponder - was post Xmas??? was there any connection??)

I concur with you Clive.

Imp steering? Only until the kingpins seized up, which never took too long!

My 124 Coupe isn't slack!

The 123 had, what is euphemistically called, "compliance".

Didn't mean to offend guys!
I wasn't implying that all 123/4s were slack, simply that steering boxes can slacken off a bit but be technically ok, whereas racks don't, so any play is a sign of a potentially dangerous fault. We had an 280E that handled like a supertanker until the mechanic adjusted it. I wouldn't imagine well maintained examples like yours to have a problem though!
