Hi, can anyone tell me whats the difference in the w210 avantegarde and elegence suspension as i have a e220 cdi elegence and want to fit the 18" amgs on it but the car sits abit high ive seen the avantegarde w210s and they sit low which will look good with amgs fitted. if anyone knows of some avantegarde suspension for sale or even a breaker please let me know.

thanks

Elegance sits higher, suspension change seems excessive

Avantgarde springs are stiffer and the ride height is lower.

You can alter the ride height by changing the rubber shims at the top of the springs.

Rubber shims? does that mean the springs are basically the same except the actual spring rate and that if i want my car to look like an avantgarde, all i need do is remove/change some of the shims?

The Avantgarde has lower, stiffer springs than the Elegance. To replace the springs with new Merc ones is expensive & aftermarket ones will probably give you a poor ride. The car can be lowered by fitting new, thinner spring cups/seats. They are fitted on the tops of the springs (so springs out to change) & come in 5 different heights on front, 3 or 4 on rear. Cost about £8 each. Maximum achievable drop is about 1" but this depends on what size you have fitted at the moment. You may be able to see with the steering on full lock , look at the top of the spring, see the rubber seat & count the "pips" or "nipples" that are just visable on the outer edge. 5 is high, 1 is low. You want 2 front & 2 rear "1s"

i was aware that the spring rate and therefore the stiffness of the springs were different. i wasnt aware of the shims though. i thought the difference was totally in the spring, as it is on other cars! im not thinking of changing the springs on mine, but if im ever forced to, i may consider a slight drop in height or even full avantgarde spec, but i dont want to spoil the ride so id be reluctant to mess about too much! i seem to think springs are around £50 each? at least dads rear one for his w203 was.

The good thing with dropping the car using just the rubber cups is that it drives just the same as before, just looks better :D ...........& cheaper

Replacing the rubber cups works a treat, I fitted one "pip" rubbers to both ends of my W210 Elegance, it sits about 35mm lower and looks much better. There have been no adverse effects to handling or ride quality at all.

The difference is one of the cars has an Elegence badge, on the front wings ............. the other has Avantgarde in the same place.

Hi

They are 18" staggered set up, 235/40/18 on front and 265/35/18 on rear.

hmm. as soon as i find a decent, long term/permanent job, i must start saving then! light up sills, AMG wheels and more power required!

incidentally, i see in your signature you have parameter steering. what on earth is that?? im assuming the tints you refer to in your signature are what looks a bit like privacy glass in the rear or your car's pics? not much point in that on a saloon. not when its just me most of the time anyhow!!!

I thought it was parametric steering? anyway it means its speed sensitive i think and its nice and light at parking speeds unlike my wifes 203 which is way way to heavy at slow speeds.

Worth keeping an eye on e bay for the wheels.

Brians got tints because hes tied in with the russian mafia and is Irelands biggest cement smuggler, hence the reason he runs an estate.

I wish my alloys were that tidy mine are scabbed to hell.
