I am servicing my brakes. Had no problems removing calipers. Discs seem to be solidly frozen to hubs. They resisted quite hard mallet blows with a heavy weight on the dust cap to react the blows. Prying with a crowbar as hard as I dared also had no effect. Should I remove the whole hub and jump on the disc or what? Any hints gratefully received.

Get a good heavy hammer and skelp the back of the disc. I take it that you are putting new discs on the car, have you removed the one Allen key bolt on the disk there is one Allen key bolt and a dowel on each disc and also have you removed the calliper cradle

I presume you have removed the bolt ?
You could try a little WD40 squirted down the joint to help ease it. Give it a few mins to work, like I didn't! (you live and learn).

Brake disc removal

Again - just check there isn't a grub screw holding the disc in place. I've encountered the same problem (but not with a Merc).

You mention that you're servicing the brakes? New pads, or general clean and rebuild? If you plan to use the discs again, then it is a little more tricky getting them off. If the discs are scored and/or are below recommended wear thickness then put on new ones.

To remove, rotate hub and use sharp knocks every 1/4 revolution using something bigger than a hammer. I've used the reverse of a large hatchet before. If it's still stuck, I've reverted to a double handed axe (not the cutting edge), which does the trick. If the discs are still servicable - the only way to protect the disc face will be to use a piece of wood G-Clamped in place before striking. Just watch your brake hoses, etc.

Before reassembly - use a smear of copper ease on the hub before putting the disc back on.

You dont say but im taking a guess your trying to remove the rear disks!!!!!
If so, its possible its the same setup as mine where the park brake is used.It has brake shoes on the inside of the hub which need to be slackened off first so the disk will eventually slide off.

Removing brake discs

Thanks for all the replies. It is the front brakes which need new discs and pads. Yes, I have removed the set screws. With the car on jack stands there is not a lot of room to swing a hammer. There seems to be some grey, putty-like substance in the interface between the hub and the central hole of the disc.
Is a large hub puller needed? I have tried to hire one in Bristol to get the flywheel off my outboard motor and could not find one big enough. Any other ideas? I don't like angle griders and the metal is cast iron.

I can assure you the discs will definitely come off with a large hammer.
Turn the steering so that you can hit the disc where the calliper bolts on
It is the only place you can hit it without hitting the back plate try at least a 4lb hammer you might break a lot of sweat but they will come off unless someone has welded them on. hope this helps.

:D The correct procedure for replacing brake discs on the E class is as follows.
1/ Is to open the boot take out jack and wheel key.
2/ Remove wheel trim if fitted.
3/ Loosen wheel nuts.
4/ Jack car up and support with axle stands and remove wheels.
5/ Remove calliper and support the calliper taking weight of the flexi brake pipe.
6/ Remove the calliper-mounting bracket
7/ Remove the one screw holding the disc to the hub.
8/ Now for the good bit get the biggest hammer that you can lay your hands on and
batter F**k out the back of the disc taking care that the disc does not fall on your
feet. Job Completed
9/ Now go and wash your hands take a can from the fridge sit back and just think
what all the fuss was about.
