Welcome back Stuart , bet you miss that 129 it was a stunner ....
Hi John. Yes, I still miss it every day!
But it’s gone to a good owner now so at least I know it’ll carry on being cherished.
Hopefully I can get a nice modern E class estate. I'm still undecided about what my crystal ball is telling me about prices in these difficult times.
One day I’m sure they will drop, the next I'm sure they will increase
As you know I’m a fussy buyer anyway so it’s a nightmare trying to decide!

One of the greatest problems as I see it is that there is an increased demand, so replacing your unreliable crystal ball is more expensive.

Completely off topic but a nostalgia photo!
They really don’t make them like that any more.

Bumping an old thread! Considering a GLE 2019. I notice the cars badged up as GLE 300d have the OM 654, albeit with a higher power output than the E220d. Has anybody experienced this car and how does the engine suit? There is quite an uplift in price to go for the 6 cylinder!

Might be worth starting a new thread, this might get lost in here...
@Blobcat had an E Class 213 with the OM654 so can comment on the engine, but not sure is there are any owners with it in the GLE? @keefysher has the 3.0...

The engine (in 220d guise) was very, very, very good with the 9G box in the E220d W213 I had - GLE will be heavier and no doubt poorer aerodynamics so the extra output will be most welcome.
It's not a sports engine, it's great at sitting on the motorway at legal speeds and 1,250 rpm

I had the 220d and as Blobcat says, a very good engine and smooth as silk with the 9G gearbox. Unfortunately I've now got the 400d  (which is stunning really!!)

I think in the GLE, the 220d would be adequate, but the 300d a much better drive.

In a word, awesome. I've only done around 150 miles so far as Working from Home in lockdown and not had much chance to go out, so still running in and not put my foot down too much yet, but the OM656 engine is smooth as silk and has a lovely purr turning to a controlled growl as you accelerate. There is a picture on my thread in General. The airmatic controls bumps nicely when cruising. Also like the Air Balance, though it came with Freeside Mood, and thinking of changing to one of the others and not totally sold on the actual smell. Got a nice run up to Cumbria in a couple of weeks hopefully so will get the chance to fully appreciate it :)

To clairfy, I starred this thread and do have a 220d E Class. And the engine is great in the E Class. However was interested i opinions on the GLE. Worry that it is too small an engine for the GLE. I would like to think the more powerful 4 cylinder in the 300d may work...

Very tempting to go for the new 2.9l 6 cylinder 350d but have never experienced that engine. Good to hear thoughts above on the 400d which is a higher tuned version.

The nomenclature is very confusing nowadays.

If you can afford it, I'd definitely go for the OM656 engine. The OM654 is a great engine, but the OM656 takes it to another level.

As said the V6 OM642 is a good engine but you won’t better the IL6 for performance I still miss my OM613 a great engine

I actually waited for this new in-line 6 for 4 years (from MB first stating they were bringing one back).
Was happy to keep my old inline 6 E320 Cdi (bought new) until I could order the E400d estate.

As Malcolm and Billy Boy stated earlier with 340 PS, 700Nm torque, O-62 in 5.1 sec (estate) 4 MATIC and a 9 speed box it really is out of this world. I tried the new CLS with the same engine which led me to spec mine with the 20" multi spokes c/w Michelin P34 ZP acoustics which, coupled with the improved overall sound insulation, makes it much quieter and smoother than the old 320 was on 225 16s.

A colleague had E63s but got rid quite quickly due to quality of ride and noise level.

I tried the 350 but not on the same planet as the 400.

G

PS Round trip to Southwold (200 miles_ gave 54 mpg - admittedly if you want you can drop it to high 20s in Sport plus combined with plenty of wellie!

Pleased the car and engine have lived up to expectations - you may have presented me with a dilemma I’d decided that I wouldn’t buy another diesel car but this IL6 is making me think again. I know the 213 is a good platform but spoilt for choice on either diesel or petrol engines currently a far cry from when the 212 was introduced

Exceeded expectations by a mile would be my response.

I was thinking E63 but no good for pulling a caravan - also, given a colleagues reaction (uncomfortable and noisy not compensated for by performance) I'm glad I didn't .

My dealership lent me a GLE for the day when mine was in for servicing.
Ironically, I had considered a GLE 350 before ordering the E400d - have to say I was disappointed with it as the ride was far too jittery, rolled a lot in corners and did not feel overly stable.

Not heard of the Acoustic tyres before. Intriguing!

They really are amazing - but expensive. I was able to test out a CLS 400d with them on 20" which led to me ordering on mine.

We've switched our W212 to CrossClimate+, so that we are better equipped to get the caravan out of small Certified Location caravan sites. But I am interested to hear about a tyre that makes huge diameter low profiles easier to live with.
