Hi
My wife has just returned from 5 hrs or more of car problems, AA men, relay to garage etc...
It is a 2000 E320CDI Estate. The probs started with the ABS light coming on and the car going into limp mode. 1 hr later my wife tried the car and all the electrics seemed ok but the starter wouldnt turn. The AA came out and managed to jump start it and found that the gear stick was stuck in park. Then he changed some fuses under the aircon housing and every time he changed it it blew immediately. In the end he forced the gear stick manually into neutral ! Brute strength! The car wouldnt start in (forced) neutral but was ok in park to start. They then towed it out and then trailered it. THEN the windows wouldnt shut and so had to be forced shut as my wfe held the button and the AA man helped them up. AND then the key wouldnt come out of the ignition !
I am guessing it is a battery issue (AA says its ok).
Or maybe it is the ignition ?
Anyone know. It is at an indie in Cranleigh for them to try and diagnose tomorrow!
thanks
Gary

It could be battery as they can cause lots of issues. Malcolm will be along shortly :) to give you advice on that.
The thing that has annoyed me about your story is the forcing of the gear lever. There is a small flap by the 'D' which is there to release the lever so that you can get it towed onto a flat bed truck or pushed off the road. If the AA man didn't know that then he could have caused quite a bit of damage. The procedure is listed out in the owners manual although I can sympathise that asking your wife to read the manual whilst in the middle of a breakdown is not the best option.

Gulp re the gearbox - I did tell my wife about the manual section for putting it in neutral and the AA man followed the instructions but only found a cable (I am quoting my wife!) and so couldnt do anything but force it.

This is a battery problem, as blobcat points out some road side asistance can work out expensive.

All of your problems are down to your battery being U/S you have a EIS lock on the key and should come out with the new battery, the windows will need re setting.
What did they use to jump the car with.
Do get a good battery,Varta, bosch, banner,Exide,Lucas and not a Halfords or shop home brand special.

Those things are not good for our cars, but nothing to do about it now, lets just hope it will all re set. Post back when you have the battery.

Will do - will get my wife to call garage first thing to suggest battery plus to get them to check for stuffed electrics and more importantly for samage to gear box. I have emailed the AA tonight to tell them I hold them liable if any damage.
thanks

Dont worry tonight,as you know your key can only come out in P with your foot on the brake, with it all locked up its appears worse than it maybe.

Hello

This fault is the aux cooling fan in the left hand fuse box blowing a fuse in the K 40 relaybox. The fan is blowing the fuse. You need to disconect the fan and renew the fuse and all will be well. The fan is connected by two wires from the top of the K40 in a single conector block. Once you have got the car running there is no need to renew the fan. DCAG dropped the fan towards the end of production of the 210

This will be of the same design then as the 202 where the module fills up with water and does not stut off, situated just in front of the bumper nearside.

Maybach has hit his fault on the head,I have just been reading it up.

If you would like the details I can Email them to you of this fix for your car.

It is a water related fault and an easy fix as long as the assist man has not damaged your control lever.

I have just had that fan replaced, only two weeks ago. As for the transmission I am horrified at what the AA man did and it very much seems like he or the AA did not have a clue as to what they were doing. Chances are that some dmaage will have been caused to the selector unit which is another item you can expect to fail...mine was gone at 105k but I know many went at half that mileage, probably related to number of long or short journeys. In my case the fan went faulty and did not blow the fuse but did drain the battery. The dealer knew immediately what the problem was and sorted it out. I still have the original battery but if the battery goes out of condition it causes all sorts of funny electrical glitches.

Do you know when the fan was dropped? Just wondering if this is applicable to my 2001 (sept) W210.

Thanks,

Dom.
