Rear nearside window makes grinding noise and fails to go all the way up or down. Managed to close it by pushing it up manually but could just as easily be pushed open again with not too much resistance being offered by whatever is holding it up. Can someone help please I have done a search but could not find this specific problem.

Hi Jim.
The teeth on your window regulator quadrant are 'shot'. If you're lucky the teeth on the motor gear might be O.K.
Best to take out the unit complete and check before sourcing replacement item/s. You can prop the window shut temporarily with a piece of wood or something while you're looking for a replacement, easily obtained from a breakers for a fraction of the cost of new items.
Cheers, Tom.

Thanks for reply I have now found lots of threads now I know what to look for. Before I steam in and try to fix do you know if it can be unbolted or will it be the rivet model, it is a 1999 car.
PS It may be beyond my capabilitys anyway I am in a wheelchair and I will have to talk my wife through it, what do you think?
Thanks
Jim

OK this is the situation, we stripped the door down and took out the motor the nylon teeth we could see looked fine but the cable that pulls the window is all kinked and loose and tied up and wedged and obviously has became dislodged from where it should be. Is it possible to replace this cable or should I now take to a speciallist. I dont want to spend £100s any idea what it might cost to put right.
Thanks
Jim

Hi Jim.
I mistakenly thought it was the 'quadrant and scissors lever' type mechanism, not cable, although the basic operating principles are the same. No personal experience of the cable operation but I'm sure someone will come in and help. You're halfway to fixing it now. Be patient and if necessary prop up the window meantime as I suggested till someone can advise.
Good luck and well done your wife! (You can buy her a Haynes manual now for a 'pressy'!)
Cheers, Tom.
