After several months and much lurking in this forum (thanks for your inadvertent but appreciated help) I bought my first MB 2 weeks ago. Although all is running well I have noticed a discrepancy with the engine number. According to the data card (and the Russian VIN site) my engine number should be 111 942 22 033026. However, stamped on the front of the block beside the thermostat are the 10 digits 111 203 04 73.

I assumed that there had been an engine replacement and obviously it would have huge implications on the value of the car's "full" service history. I intended to talk to the dealer but first wanted to check what I actually have so I could decide on what solution would be acceptable. I have googled and visited dozens of sites to identify the 10 digit engine but I cannot find any match beyond 111.

Is it possible that the number I'm looking at is not actually the engine number and that I'm unfairly thinking evil thoughts about the dealer? Is the engine number stamped elsewhere on the block? If it is an engine number can anyone help identify it?

Any advice appreciated

Thanks in advance

Thats a part number NOT an engine number.

The engine number is on the block under the inlet manifold.

Thank you both for speedy replies.

kth286 - its a 1997 w210
BlackC55 - thank you for the info. Other posts suggested that the number was visible from the front of the car and just behind the radiator which is where I obviously have been going wrong.

I tried to check for the correct number a few minutes ago but I'm just home, engine's hot, it's dark, it's raining and surprise, I couldn't see it. I'll try again when there is some light and let you both know how I get on.

Thanks again

I finally got time and good enough weather to check the engine number. However, after 60 mins of peering down, peering up, using a mirror and flashlight I still couldn't find the 14 digit number. I came across several other numbers each of which turned out to be a part number. They all took a while to decipher because each seemed to be located in the least accessible/viewable places possible. Next step is to get a dentist's mirror and flexible light as there still are spaces I couldn't see into with the bigger mirror and flashlight.

I did come across an old MB paper label stuck to the back of the cylinder head which gives the correct engine number but at this stage I'm determined to find the full metal version.

The hunt continues. I'll keep you posted.
