I've just bought an 1993 E200 Estate. Please can anyone tell me how to fold down the rear seats. Is there a little lever hiding somewhere. I've managed to fold the bottom up but the backrests are refusing to move. I've got the owners manual but that just says they should fold forward. Help Please

with the headrests out and the rear doors open they should just fold forwards - smaller of the two seats first. if they don't - check the locking plungers haven't seized - just above the door catch on the door rebate - pukk them all the way out and try again. Next plan is to attempt to lift the seat rear by holding it's base and pulling it forward. these seats have a clip that sometimes needs a little persuasion.

There's a whole thread somewhere which ended in someone backing their car against a wall using a plank of wood to force the seat forward :)

I had a similar snag....cured by this.
1. Open rear doors and keep them open.
2. lift rear sear bases by lifting handle, fold forward.
3. Remove rear head restraints.
4. Climb into the rear and shove seat forwards. (with rear blind/load cover attached)
It may be a little stiff, mine was from lack of use, but works perfectly now
Hope it works.

Twas me who used the plank and house trick! I could have avoided all that if I had taken more time to work out the mechanisms for locking the seat backs.

They are locked by 2 mechs. The one in the door aperture is a plunger as mentioned before, this locks the top of the seat back. The other is located on the floor of the car, under the seat base. This has a sprung platform, you will see 2 of them next to each other, and is pushed down when the seat base is lowered. The seat back is hinged, and the 2 sections of the hinge have teeth on them that engage when the seat back is upright, and the base is down. The sprung platform lifts up as the seat base is lifted, disengaging the hinge locking teeth.

Check to ensure that you can move the sprung platforms up and down freely, they will more than likely be corroded and need WD-40 or similar spraying on them and working up and down by hand. Once they move freely, you should have no problems.

Feel free to call me on 07790 492789 if you need help whilst doing it.

Best,

Jim

Nooo, 100% it will be the release rods at either door catch, they come adrift at the bottom where they should operate the seat release, bit fiddly to fix, pull up door seal, prise up the 3 spring clips holding the inner trim (inner wheelarch carpeted trim) lever the trim up as far as the stuck seat will allow, you will see the rod from the door plunger dissapearing down to the seat hinge mech. bet it is flopping around, fiddle it back in place with long nose pliers or whatever (dont force the seat, you will make it worse)
