Hi, I have an M reg E200 estate automatic gearbox (124 'facelift')
I am having trouble with tickover idling, it revs at 2000 out of gear, when it is put into gear (gear box not happy) it jumps from 1000 to 100 a few times and eventually stalls. It runs fine when its cold! I am a novice desperatley trying to get my family back on the road. It has been looked at by 3 local garages that could not solve the problem. In the process I have changed the airflow sencor, the sencor next to the temp sender, adjusted the screw behind the plastic cover 100 times, tried 2 other second hand throttle bodies (on the first there was a 90 percent improvment for a month, when I changed the second its the same) I have changed the OVP relay for a second hand one and it runs the same, even without the OVP relay. I have checked all the vacuum pipes.
The local Mercedes dealer recomeded a new throttle body and ecu & ovp relay which comes to over a grand and no guarentee it wil resolve it. The bodywork and under body is all clean, itll be a shame to turn it into a chicken coop!
ps, this is my first time using a forum.
Any advice apreciated.
-Dean.

Hello Dean

You may want to read my thread here:

http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=42303

I have nearly resolved my issues, buy your engine is very different to the 2.3 litre in mine.

Have you checked the engine temperature sensor if yours has one - on mine it has a lead like a plug lead going to it. You should be able to get around 6kohms across two sets of terminals when cold.

Running ok when cold, not when hot may indicate a temp. sensor problem.

Have you found any info relative to your cars fuel injection on the net?

Hope this helps

Tony

have a look at the throttle linkage at the throttle body it must close & rest against the micro switch on on the body it might need adjusted a bit if it isnt it will cause this type of erratic idling when hot & no probs when cold:D

If this is a late 124 then the switch on the throttle body may not be working and switching the car to idle , as the fail safe is 1500rpm off the main computer, check that the switch is closed when at idle with an ohm metter

Just a recommendation before you do anything, check the engine loom wiring as the palstic coating breaks up and the wires short, the engine sensors at on mine where shorting out and had to rewire all the sensor plugs, worth checking the condition of the loom running to the air flow meter as mine was shorting all the way to the ECU.

Sadly Ive had my E220 (93) to contend with in the last few months, I bought another 93 E220 saloon just for the engine loom and MAF, MB want £500 for the engine loom and its no better than the ones fitted in 93 so sooner or later it will start to crumble again.

Ive also had a few customers cars in with the same faults and after spending as much time on my car I know theres no point looking at anything else until the loom is 100% ok, if its not then theres no point with any diags until its sorted or shorted as the case maybe.

My loom took out the OVP and MAF, luckily the ECU is fine, the donor car I have has a perfect loom so its either been replaced at some point or its just good.

Main places to look ate the MAF loom as its long and if you handle the loom with the engine running you can hear the engines note change and the engine stumble a little, the black plastic sheild has to be cut from the plug upwards, the 4 wires on mine where all bare and the insulation was powder, the engine sensors at the front of the engine where also shorting causing poor running.

Worth checking as damage it can do will right the car off.

Today I disconnected the battery, removed the block connector from the ecu, sprayed it with switch cleaner. After re connecting it now runs perfectly:-? Mabe a bad connection there?
...Tho I hadnt dissconected the battery scince changing the second throttle body, ovp unit and new air flow sencor. Im only guessing here but mabe dissconecting the battery reset something after I changed one of the above parts? ...Or mabe Itll play up tomorrow, she's out on test.

At the moment I am 'nerviously' happy.

Thanks to all who replied.

The e200 is better but the tickover had one little tantrum and then settled, Im still on the road but there is still a fault lurking. Havnt changed/checked the IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE (IAC) anyone know where it is? Can it be tested?

...yep, just peeled back the cloth banding in a few places, the engine loom is crumbled. ...New loom= £401.00 + vat, used loom would posibly be near the same condition. Looking into my options:sad:
