We currently own a W124 E220 Coupe and are now contemplating the purchase of a 1996 (W124) E200 Estate. It's tough getting the baby in and out of the back of a coupe, and there's a certain amount of baggage that goes with the whole parenthood experience.
Had been looking for a 220 estate, but not many on the market right now and an E200 with low miles is for sale locally.

My question is for anyone with access to technical specs.
Does the E200 have higher overall gearing than the E220 ?
I'm thinking about driving at motorway speeds, the 2.2 is happiest below 80 mph. At 80, it's doing about 3500 rpm.
Not that I'm going to be racing it, but would the 2 litre be about the same?

Logically, if it has exactly the same gearing in gearbox and differential, then it would have to rev higher. If we do buy this car one of it's first trips would be a long haul to Ireland and back.

No, logically if they have the same gearing they will be revving the same

I've driven a couple of E200s and they're similar to an E220 but a bit more gutless. Both of them will cruise at speed easily but neither of them is quick to accelerate because they lack torque

There's a slight difference between the top speeds in each gear between the E200 and E220 in the auto version, but not the manual, suggesting the axle ratio is the same on both but that the gearing is different on the auto for E200 and E220. Rev limit is 6200 rpm for both:

Auto, top speeds in each gear
1st 51 (200) 54 (220)
2nd 89 (200) 95 (220)
3rd 142 (200) 151 (220)
4th 183 (200) 193 (220)

Thanks Nick,
You're right. Hadn't had my coffee before posting.

Is the E200 that gutless ?
Our 16v 220 is certainly no road burner, even compared to my aging BMW 525i, but it's not too bad.
Certainly it lacks the punch of an old W123 280E that I used to drive at work about ten years ago, but my main wish for it would be a fifth gear for motorway driving.

Anyway, I'm on a tight budget looking for a solid Merc estate, so might have to compromise a little on spec for now.
