e211 wipers haywire

E 211 estate, 220 cdi , 56 plate ,......164000 miles going well......ok guys ,,,out taxi ing last night ,,wipers were on auto doing there job then after a couple of hours of intermitten rain they decided to go from a steady wipe to slowly increase in speed untill after about 30 seconds they were going at a very fast speed. I turned them of, then back on to auto a few times but they still kept on speeding, up i then tried clicking to the next position on the stalk the slow setting and they went fast, then clicked to the fast setting and they went slow,,, any ideas fellas ??? Thanks in antisipation ...............................

This does sound like a faulty stalk,,it may clean up with a switch cleaner

A little different to Merc probably, but I had an XK8 doing the same this week.
The fault was the micro switch in the wiper motor not going 'open' when the motor was in park position. Without this reference the control unit was at sixes & sevens. New micro switch fixed this one.
Easy to check.
Just a thought & I could be miles off!
