Hello Everybody,

I have a problem with my E220 CDI (2001).

The car smokes when the engine is under load (terribly when under large load). At the same time as the engine revs start to drop following a gearchange, it misfires (a bit like a car with dirty points).

The following have already been changed:

MAF
EGR Valve.

None of the injectors leak, and no fault codes come up on the diagnostics machine.

Last week when it went to the MB Stealership in Newbury for some bodywork warranty work, I asked them to have a look.

The guy there said that the egr valve was faulty (prior to me replacing it). I pointed at the EGR on the front of the manifold, and said "this one?", to which he replied, "..no, there is a valve on the bottom of the turbo..".

The only thing I can see on the bottom of the turbo is the Wastegate actuator valve and I can see this move when the engine is revved.

Any ideas? I'm getting fed up of cleaning my bumper daily.

Thanks

Richard

E220 misfire/smoking again - inlet manifold builup?

I know this is an old thread but thought I'd share my recent experience with my W211 E220 CDI (the 170hp version).

I had very similar symptoms on my car (I did do a search on the forum but I used different words to describe the problem).

The main thing I noticed was that shortly after the car changed up at low revs, and especially after I lifted and reapplied the accelerator, there was a flat spot in engine pick up between 1400-1700 rpm.

I also noticed an increased amount of smoke coming out the back when I accelerated hard beyond 3000 rpm. (This started happening first, then the "misfire" started happening a few weeks later). When the car was newer I couldn't see any smoke at all.

This is on a 5 yr old, 50k mile car which is normally driven locally, with only occasional motorway trips.

After a trip down to the local indie (MBS) there were no faults showing on STAR, and the original EGR link looked to be working fine. They took it for a test drive and after a bit of experimenting, I mentioned the smoke thing and they had a play around. After a burst on kickdown there was an absolutely huge cloud of smoke out the back. Then it seemed to work better! A subsequent burst after leaving the garage and no smoke!

Their advice was that the CDI engines with an EGR valve need regular trips up to the red line on full throttle to clear out any gunk deposited on the inlet manifold due to the EGR valve. Normal driving especially in traffic or on crowded roads doesn't do this. A motorway sliproad is a good chance to do it though, obviously with caution. You have to use the kickdown switch to get the engine up to max revs, which feels a bit violent but I'm assured they are designed to take it.

So I was prescribed "one burst hard acceleration, to be taken weekly on a hot engine". On this prescription my car is working again.

My car now is the same age as the OP's when he posted this thread.

I'm hoping this keeps it clear. Any other members spotted this with their diesel Mercs?

I have never noticed this, but to be honest, nearly every other drive it gets a trip to the redline, Its hard not to :)
