My 2002 E220 CDI estate suffered a no-start last Friday. It had started that morning but after reversing out of the gge then refused to run the starter motor.

I wasn't there myself but I believe the steering lock disengaged OK, just no spin-up. Tried locking and then unlocking etc. MobiloMan (2 1/2 hrs) diagnosed a defective starter motor within 5 mins of arriving. Then a 2003 E220 saloon was promptly delivered from Budget Rental Wembley and mine was trucked to MB Park Royal (where I was told all Mobilo Life casualties in the London area go).

Not sure what sort of advert it is but the guy there said that my car wouldn't get looked at until earliest today due to the number of Mobilo cases he had on! Mine is not yet 12 mths old...

There had been a few occurrences in the preceeding months but after a few goes the starter decided to work. Will keep you posted on progress.

Car trucked to Park Royal on Friday and fixed and returned by Wed. Second key didn't go with the car at the time but my local dealer in Watford has managed to reprogram it without "green key".

Can't complain about the service I received. Apparently, there are a high number of warranty/breakdown fixes on A classes! Shame as I was thinking of getting one for the second motor...

For exmbtechs info, M.B tech say that the cooling fan in the front left box is no longer required (in the UK market) so if you have a failure just un plug and fit a new fuse. This breakdown sounds as if the repairing dealer fitted a new ignition switch why else would the Watford dealer have had to reinitialise the spare.

Of course, I meant to mention that the ignition switch was replaced. They told me the new switch would be programed to existing key so I figured that the spare would still work.

This problem might be rearing its head again. Car wouldn't start after reversing on to driveway on Sunday, so symptom is that starts OK, move briefly, try again and no-go.

I locked and then unlocked the car - still no go, then moved selector out and back into park. It then started but that could have all been coincinence.

This is the sort of problem that the dealer will likely say "can't find anything wrong with it" if I try to get it looked at before total failure. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should check/suggest to the dealer?

Thanks.

It sounds like it could be the P and N safety switch on the gearbox selector.

If it fails again try wiggling the gear selector then try again.

Packed up totally again yesterday so trucked off once more (this time to my local dealership in Watford). I'm beginning to get a bit annoyed :-(

No amount of tweaking the auto selector etc did any good. Told MB not to bother with the technician and just organise the recovery and replacement car straight away, to which they agreed.

Never had any other (always "lesser") car let me down totally twice.

Haven't been here for a while so just a brief update - local MB dealer couldn't reproduce the problem for two days, however I insisted they keep the car until they fixed it. They replaced the starter motor and I've had no problems since... let's hope it stays that way.
