Hi all just purchased a 99 E220 cdi auto If i back off the accelerator and then accelerate a clunk is heard from the rear (diff?) Im guessing its wear in the diff or drivetrain?
Any suggestions how to pin point the issue?

Cheers

Smart + others :)
Look closely at the front rear subframe mounts, they are more likely to cause a thump when on/off accelerator. The rear diff mounts rarely go but we have change a few.

My estate needed rear subframe mounts for a clunk on take off.

Get the car over a pit and let some one put it in d and r a few times, while some one looks for movement under the car. Hope this helps

Thanks for the great advice, checked out the sub frame bushes yesterday the fronts are well shot.
Think I will replace the rears at the same time.:)
Can anyone advise if these can be changed by me or is there specialist equipment required? (bushes pressed in?)
Thanks

Cannot imagine it would be easy to change these without the car up on a lift?

Certainly they can be replaced as a DIY job.

I only replaced the front ones on my old W210 with my car on the drive - I wrote a DIY thread detailing it.

They are certainly a pain to remove - don't be tempted to burn them out, there is too much rubber to do so without setting fire to your car.

You'll need a number of axle stands as well as a trolley jack.

Check the thread.

Rear subframe bushes - I thought the diff had to be dropped in order to drop the subframe?

Generally the rear ones don't wear that much.
In any case they should be replaceable but are removed from the bottom of the sub-frame, rather than the top as the fronts are. This would mean that you would need something under the car in order to help press them in, rather than pressing then between the sub-frame and the chassis.

Leverage may be a problem when lying on your back, but it should be possible.

Oh, and it's best to work with one side at a time and only loosen the bolt for the rear bush as realigning the sub-frame afterwards could be difficult for a DIYer.

Cheers for that just read your write up. Will give it a bash, pardon the pun:grin:

Mercedes make a removal tool, but too expensive for a once off job, cutting is the only way
