hi, im pete, just signed up and wonderin if you guys can help me out, ive got an n-reg e220 (w124) auto, and im havin problems! first realised somethin was up when i noticed the windscreen wiper still works even with the key completely removed from the ignition!!! upon closer inspection i found the electric windows, heated rear screen, lights and if i had more time to think, some oher stuff all do too!!! im not sure if this is the cause for the culminating problem, which is the battery going flat after a few days without use, but im concerned that it could be!!!

if you have any ideas, if its a common fault or i should set it on fire asap let me know guys!

thankyou,

pete

The ignition switches do go wrong, and stop these function, has someone shorted them all out, I think that you will need a new switch

Let me start off by saying welcome to the forum Pete.

I would not take a match to her yet, it sounds as if it just could be a faulty ignition switch. I could be wrong and I am sure others will mention if so... but it's a good place to start. Check for continuity with in the switch in the off position. If theirs continuity which I think their is. Then get a new switch.

Hope This Helps!

The barrel is the lock proper (where you put the key), that lives in the front of the lock, it turns the steering lock operating mechanism which is a grey die cast metal lump bolted to the steering column and on the rear of the complete assembly there is a round switch made of black or brown plastics with a bunch of wires connected to it, this is the area of interest.

To access the switch the cover panel under the dash has to be removed.
Examine the wiring for strange untidy add on connections, the wires should enter the switch connector cleanly without a bunch of taped up joints, if you find taped up joints get a new switch and a decent auto lecky to sort it out properly, bad workmanship here can lead to a fire.
