e220 engine growl

my 1995 e220 with 110k kms. has developed a ''growl'' between drive and overdrive from the top front of the engine, which remains with the fan belt removed,I'm thinking timing chain any suggestions much appreciated.

Your's is an M111 engine, they are relatively bulletproof and I doubt if your camchain has worn appreciably in 110k kms.
I would suggest you remove the camcover to check where contact is being made, not a big job, if the chain is slack the problem is most likely with the chain tensioner but make sure you know exactly what you are doing before touching the tensioner as incorrect assembly can destroy your engine.These are your camdrive components;http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GM=717.413&CT=M&cat=19K&SID=05&SGR=045&SGN=02
