Hello all,

I have the dreaded coffe in the header tank :( so figure I better get the head gasket changed. Where is the best place to buy the gasket kit from and new head bolts?

Also, I have the wis thing but cannot figure out how to use the damn thing so can't get the pages needed to do the job. If someone could explain in relatively simple terms how I can remove the cam cogs and wire or cable tie the timing chain to them so I can't put it all back on without mucking the timing up I would be grateful.

Cheers all,

Re the Cams, its very simple to use cable ties to tie the chain to the sprockets before you unbolt them, then the timing cannot be lost, and when you re fit just check that all of the timing marks line up.

Do remove the timing chain tensioner,

The head bolts can be measured for stretch and they may not have to be replaced.

Do check to see if you have access to the last rear bottom nut on the exhaust manifold, if you cant get to it, undo the down pipe and remove the head complete with manifold

Just ask if you need help

Head Gasket

Thanks Malcolm - great stuff.

I was thinking of using euro car parts for the gasket kit is there anywhere cheaper?

Be selective when buying cylinder head gaskets , the most probale OE supplier for this engine is either Klinger, or Victor Reinz . These companies would have to pass exhaustive sign off tests for the gaskets before they could be released for production. Cheap 'cookie cutter' gaskets are a subsitute material with the same profile as the original but in general are inferior in performance , especially if its out of India or China
ask your potential supplier whats the makers name of the gasket, if it not one of thoes mentioned dont bother

The very last place I'd be looking to save money would be the gasket itself. I'd buy it from Mercedes
