Hi

I'm committed to the purchase of a second hand E Class Estate 7 seater.

My question is, aside from the performance differences, are there any recommendations upon the reliability & longevity of the 2.1 when compared to the 3.0?

Many thanks

Hi Steve, this is a very similar thought to what is going through my head at the moment!

Good luck finding the car you want!

If you’re talking diesels? And 211 (2004-2010 reg)? The 2.1 straight 4 will return 35-40mpg on the motorway. The straight 6 will return 30-35 and be effortlessly smooth with it. The V6 is a bit of a rocketship, low 30s mpg but 0-60mph in 6.5s.

Just be aware that the two rear seats have zero legroom.

Regarding reliability buy <2013 EU5 cars (pre ADBLUE). If you are thinking about using the 7 seats regularly the 6 cylinder is the one to have

Blimey.....low 30's I've been lucky to get that from my diesel, hopefully after the new torque converter the car will improve and it wont be doing over 3000rpm's at 56mph

Eeeek! That’s almost redlining it.

Not sure if you sorted this out now, as a few months old. But I’ve had a 2011 7 seat E220 estate for 8 years. On a motorway I’ve easily got 40 mpg. It’s not as good as the v6 for power and smoothness, but it’s still pretty good and as reliable as ever if you maintain it correctly ( I’m up to about 130k mileage now). Kids loved sitting in the boot but all to big for it now. Although I never got the German logic of being able to open the tailgate remotely but not close it. Use to drive me nuts when the kids jumped out and ran off with out shutting it…
