Well we all know Mercedes like to eeek out a job. I know it’s not necessary to remove engine for a chain replacement.

You can do the chain and guides with the engine and box in?

The guides show no signs of wear if chain caught in time. Only if it the chain is allowed to rattle too much, it will destroy the top guide rail.

Oh someone mentioned that to me, taking the cam cover off to check the guide rail then winding the chain in to do it, does the chain kits come with the top guide rail too?

What about if you have to replace the guide rails? Do you drop gearbox only or you just do not replace the guides?

Top guide rail can be done in situ, but it’s not easy. The rest is an engine out job.

Thanks star for the answer and the last question I would have is actually about the guide rails. We say you will find out that the chain is streched in is early phase, would you recommend to replace chain only or also guide rails?

Chain only as there will be zero wear on the rail if the chain is done early enough. The top guide only fails when the chain is that worn it slaps against the guide rail and it breaks in half.

Good to hear. Also how would you advise to bleed air from OM651? Obviously cap of from the reservoir and full temp on heater, anything else?

Update on this -

Engine out, chain is being inspected. No idea if this a normal amount of play but it doesn’t look brand new haha

The warranty might class that as wear and tear and not cover the chain, hopefully you have not wasted your money as you could have got the chain and tensioner replaced for half the money of the inspection.

Any news, did the warranty cover this?

AA Warranty or “Motorway Direct” came back today and stated that it won’t be covered on warranty due to the “service life” of the car.

92,000 miles, Full Mercedes dealer service history all up to date.

Glad I didn’t waste £390 upgrading to the year long warranty rather than the 3 month free warranty, not even worth the paper it’s written on. They just worm out of every single claim.

Never the less, next course of action is to chase the selling dealership V12Sports and Classics. The lad on the phone has said that he’s going to speak to the management team and get a response today on how to proceed.

Will keep the thread updated.

Thought so, some warranties are not worth the paper there written on. This might be a costly learning curve. I hope not for your sake.

Update again

Selling dealer initially didn’t want to know saying they’d agreed with AA, after raising a dispute with the finance company, threatening emails etc nothing seemed to work.

Went around posting bad reviews on every single review site they’ve on, within two hours head of aftersales called to say they’re covering the entire cost.

Success somewhat, after harassing them for days.

A result in some ways, however it’s as I thought, it wouldn’t be covered as unfortunately it is wear and tear on a 651 engine especially at 92000 miles. Only your damaging reviews made the seller pay out and cut his losses and begrudgingly pay for the work. Did he ask you to remove the reviews as part of the deal?
