It seems that everyone I know who has one of these E220's in diesel has had a problem with the car and its exhaust system... was just wondering if this was the case and if so where do we stand legally in terms of MB producing duff cats for their exhausts....

Read your post with sadnesss. I bought an E270CDI in Sept 2003. Since then, the car has had 42 separate successful warranty claims, most related to power loss etc, lathough there have also been problems with electrics, suspension, steering, SRS etc.

Service from local dealer would disgrace a cold war eastern european manufacturer as they are both rude and incompetent. Supplying dealer was extremely helpful and sympathetic but they were at the other end of the country (I moved shortly after buying the car).

Final straw was car being damaged whilst in for more warranty work, and dealer falsified paperwork claiming that car had been inspected when collected (never been inspected) rather than accept liability.

Have now agreed buyback with supplying dealer as cost of warranty repairs exceeds initial (high) cost of car.

DCUK know they have major problems with the E class diesels! Persevere - if you still have warranty push dealer for buyback!

This is why I drive a 2000 car with 104,000 miles on it. Why on earth would anyone in their right mind spend what a new Mercedes costs to put up with service like that. Sure, a diesel is supposed to be cheaper to run but not Mercedes diesels. The costs and hassle swallow up all of the savings. Even the longer range between refills disappears and is replaced by long periods off road. Instead go for a Lexus, pay a bit more for juice, save a fortune on repairs and live a longer hassle free existence. Sure, I would love a new E class but having a full service record from new I can honestly say that the abnormal repairs effectively doubled the running cost and a reliable petrol car at 18mpg would have been a cheaper alternative. Of course, there is also the Lexus build quality and reliability too. Unfortunately some of hem GS in particular could do with an aesthetic improvement.

I am not anti Mercedes but I am very much anti bad customer service and Mercedes seem to excel at that.
