I like the KIA warranty but unfortunately not the cars!

Sorry to hear this and again as above don’t give up on getting a contribution from MB this shouldn’t happen to a 3 year old car with 37k miles on the clock whatever happened to ’the best or nothing’ I’d expect this from a LADA (remember them) not a premium German brand

I read yesterday that Motor Easy have listed the least reliable cars in the UK over 3 years old, and Mercedes have 4 models in the bottom 10!
As I write this, both of mine are with Mercedes not long out of warranty, the C250 (34,000 miles) has a Nox sensor problem and the intelligent LED headlight DRL has stopped working.
The SLC (10,000 miles) has the blind spot assist not working and the intelligent LED headlight pointing to the sky.
Currently looking at something in the region of £5000 to fix both unless Mercedes step up to the plate.
After having a CLK that rusted after 4 years, resprayed, then rusted again at 6 years old and resprayed again, I fear my next cars will be anything but Mercedes.

^It's hard to argue with that. Especially the rust comment....

Yep - totally agree the MB badge is appearing on a premium brand car with not so premium parts - I’m slowing losing my appetite to own a S213 I might as well keep the S212 and spend money on that. It has intelligent lighting (which I really like) but not the cursed DRL in the headlight.

I hate to say this on a Mercedes forum but l've been considering very seriously a Jaguar Xe. I test drove a 3 year old one last week, 12kmiles and l have to say l was very impressed. I had a tough decision to make and it took me days, but I've decided to stick with my CLK for now. I came very close though and l might be tempted to revisit this again soon.

The trouble is you also hear about Jaguar owners complaining about reliability as well .
BMW anyone

Any tell take signs, places to look for early signs of this? Where is the vacuum pump located and brake servo on the 654?

Is it a slow leak or all or nothing?

Vac pump is integrated into the engine oil pump, that lives in the engine sump. Brake servo is in the usual place!

All or nothing, I would not be concerned and suspect these are isolated.

I've just found this thread and i am in the same situation, however under warranty thankfully.
When i was researching my new car, i was sent in the direction of this problem being voiced on a german forum, which having checked in on there again, the numbers are quickly growing. This issue was supposedly only affecting the OM656 6cyl engines, but now more and more OM654's are seeing it.

Same issue on my E400d, 2020, not even 12k miles. Requires engine out etc. Brakes began to fail as the engine entered limp mode. Regardless of if they fix it, i'm concerned that they will rush the job or that the damage caused by the oil contamination will cause further issues down the line.

I'd be going for Mercedes through court, no doubt in the OP's situation.

I'm going to write up my own thread - and i've just been sent an article for a 800,000+ car recall on OM654/656 engines noting a fire risk with 'no fix available'.

I had taken the car to a MB specialist who was actually having his lunch when I turned up
He stopped his lunch and got straight into the car pulled it into the workshop and spent the next 30 minutes on my car
Diagnosed the fault as the internal seal gone in the oil/vac pump as well as confirming the fault by plugging in his computer
Said “Sorry mate this is gonna cost you big time”
No charge from him for the fault finding and he advised I take it to the dealers as it was too much for him to take on as he was fully booked for the next 6 weeks or so
Dealers charged me £174 to diagnose a fault that I told them about
MB have rejected a goodwill payment according to the dealer
I’m going to try and contact them directly and push this as far as I can but it’s nearly impossible to get hold of the right people in MB UK I keep getting directed to the same line no matter what number I ring

Have to say this has sickened me to my core and actually making me look towards another brand once this concern is fixed and I get rid of the car, I’m concerned that this could happen again a couple of years down the line
The only saving grace is some parts are not available and the dealers have given me a brand new GLA 200d to use for as long as my car is in for repair, which could be quite some time.
But it’s still a hefty chunk of cash to pay out for such a young vehicle
I would take to Twitter - or ask for the Complaints Office or the Press Office at Mercedes HQ. Make as much public noise as possible, saying that Mercedes should recall that model. See what happens. Good luck.

My knowledge doesn’t extend to that depth buddy  (see my signature)
Blessed indeed are those whose peace and tranquility is not disturbed by the horrors generated by BMW N47 engines!!! During a major brainstorm involving accountants and engineers, they replaced modernised / improved (allegedly) a perfectly good well proven engine, the M47,with the N47. They transferred all the timing gear from the front, where it was very accessible, to the rear, between the transmission and engine where it was basically inaccessible. They did this on the premise that it was designed for the life of the vehicle ( shades of MB automatics) This combined with the accountants input of cheap plastic tensioners, sealed its fate. It was not uncommon to be driving along any road, motorway etc. And without warning..the aforementioned chain would jump a tooth or two, and BANG...engine gone, kaput, end of story. Problem was, all power driven functions, brakes, steering etc. went with it, which caused many to wish that they had carried some spare underwear as standard emergency kit.

Still many out there. An acquaintance of mine has a 520d which decided to pack in on the motorway just before Christmas. Timing chain. N47 engine. £800 to fix and they got off lightly!

N20 and N26 aren't without their issues either....
No they were not..swirl flaps ( amongst other things) gave a lot of trouble too. But the N47 was in a class all of its own. And despite supposedly fixing the problem in 2011, it was still appearing in 2014, and later but not as often.

As long as it's not something powered with the N47 engine, it will be fine...:D
