Hey guys.
I’ve recently purchased a 2017 E220d 98k miles. It has been serviced yearly by Addison Lee.

anyway today I thought I’d check out the engine. Removed the oil cap whilst it was running and it was like a train. A lot of white smoke. Some oil splattering out.

should I be concerned?

the car drives perfectly fine no loss of power or over heating etc.
The ad blue tank needs to be replaced as a sensor has failed but other than that there isn’t any other issues ?

I did take a video but it won’t let me post it

I would like to see a still picture of the oil filler cap from below.

What do you mean? A photo of the bottom of the oil cap?
Take oil filler cap off and take a picture of the inside of it.
If it’s full of “mayonnaise” then you might have a condensation or head gasket issue

Uploaded to YouTube. Unsure if it is smoke or just steam

It's called blowby.
Caused by two things.
1. As the engine sound over there is a small variation in internal air volume in the engine.
2. No piston ring can seal 100% perfectly. This leads a a small amount of combustion gases getting past the rings into the crankcase. If there were no engine breathers the internal pressure would rise and eventually blow oil out of every seal and joint and up past the rings into the combustion chamber. Even with breathers the pressure in the crankcase varies a little giving the chuffing you saw.

That looks to me to be quite normal, especially for a diesel.

They have a breather system that sometimes gets clogged arteries, especially if it's led a sedentary life. It is normal to see what your video shows ... except that looks slightly excessive to me.
Take it to the gym - exercise can help. Blast it for some miles at high revs, and check again.

Thanks for the replies. I was really nervous after I saw it but no so concerned now. There doesn’t seem to be any immediate problems. I used a cheap code scanner and got U05A3 and C0700

The bit that you screw the oil filler cap onto is if you like an upside down saucepan, Look for any hose connected to this saucepan. That hose is part of the so called 'breather' system. You can follow that hose to see the next item in the breather system. Please put up some pictures.

Like the others it's not unusual. I never take the oil filler cap off when the engine is running unless I want to be frightened by the chain whirring around spraying oil on me!
What was the issue with the AdBlue tank?

Internal sensor failed apparently. Mercedes say the whole tank has to be replaced £1500. Though it doesn’t affect the car just need to make sure it’s topped up as I can’t get a reading

We've had a few of those reported now, hence the question- that's one hell of a price. Have you found yourself a Mercedes Independent yet?
