I am new to this site and this is my first post. I have a 2001 (Y) registered E240 Elegance which looks and drives very well having covered some 72k miles. The last 'B' service was done at a local independent leaving my wallet significantly lighter and this time would like to have a bash at it ourselves. In addition to the engine oil and filter we would like to change the oil in the, auto box and rear diff. As we are saving on the labour element we can splash out on the best oils available without over egging the pudding. What would people recommend and Is there anything that we are likely to have any particular difficulty with? Many thanks in advance. Adrian

welcome to the forums!

nothing too difficult that i can think of. however DO use the correct Merc transmission fluid, NOT ordinary atf, and DONT be tempted to use cheap aftermarket filters. i tried with my 1st merc and it caused problems. genuine filter came with all seals, sump plug washer was supplied (as dealer stores guys know me and knew what i was doing) and the price difference? £1.50. it really wasnt worth all the hassle! not sure about the oil in the rear diff, but i have a feeling its normal EP85/90 (normal gear oil) but im sure someone will be along soon to confirm this 1 way or the other.

also ensure the internals of the auto box are kept squeaky clean. dust doesnt do them any favours! to drain the torque converter, the usual method is to disconnect a pipe from the oil cooler and crank the engine (without starting it) till the oil stops pumping out.

You will have to disconnect the cooling pipe and spin the engine for a few seconds to drain the converter

The fluids are here
