I have a 2001 E240 and having a lot of trouble with the gearbox. It will stick in a single gear (often neutral) and can only be unstuck by stopping and restarting the engine. Also gear-changes are a bit clunky.

Any ideas before I take it in...?

It's an old car so I don't want to spend a fortune on it but all other aspects of it good and I am very fond if it after all these years.

It could be one of many things
It could be just low oil level, the valve body has gone down, the electrical plate, a leaking pilot bush
Really needs to go on a star machine to be diagnosed.

I have had a coupleof times the battery has caused this as well as it doesnt hae enough power in it

Thanks for the answers so far. I will see about a STAR indie and get the oil and fluid checked anyway. In the meantime a further question...how can I find out what model of gearbox my 2001 E240 has?
